Sony announces an interesting new way to win a coveted PlayStation 5 console, giving fans a better chance at obtaining the elusive machine.

The PS5 has been one of the most sought-after consumer electronics devices on the market since its release last year. With a number of outside factors impacting the availability of the console and an army of bots competing to gobble up units to resell at steep markups, gamers are lucky to even get one in their shopping cart. However, Sony has announced a new plan to help players get their hands on a unit.

During a press conference today, a PlayStation representative took the stage to announce a trendy new initiative the company is launching, aimed at getting consoles into the hands of the players that deserve them the most. While the move has been criticized as "extreme" by some, the response from the PlayStation community has been positive, with fans citing their excitement for getting another shot at the coveted system.

"Today, we're pleased to announce that PlayStation fans will soon be able to compete with their fellow gamers in an exciting new way," the masked PlayStation rep stated, voice concealed by a synthesizer. "Customers interested in the system can now participate in bloody, 100-person combat for a chance at one of our most innovative consoles to date! Starting now!" The masked figure cackled as a 12-ton door sealed a group of 36 attendees into a room, which began to rapidly fill with water.

"The last person standing will receive a PS5, a copy of Sackboy's Big Adventure, and a 3-month subscription to PlayStation Plus," the rep stated while removing their mask, revealing themselves to be none other than Shuhei Yoshida. A ladder then fell from the ceiling, which lifted Yoshida from the room.

Sony has since confirmed that the Battle Royale initiative will be expanded to several regions in the United States over the course of the next few months. The first will be a field in New Mexico, where participants will be dropped off and left to fend for themselves until a winner is declared. Armaments will be scattered around the location to keep things running smoothly, and "to please the game masters behind this hellish ritual," one source familiar with the matter claimed.

The last person standing in each match will then be entered into a PlayStation Direct queue, where they'll have an opportunity to purchase one of the six PS5 consoles Sony was able to allocate for the competition. There's been no word on how long the program will last, but nearly 73% of respondents to a survey on the matter stated that it was preferable compared to the current system.
