Godzilla may be King of the monsters, King Kong may be king of the jungle, but Reddit will forever be the king of fan theories. When Redditors aren't arguing, they're speculating about all topics of popular culture. Sometimes these arguments ride just on the edge of ridiculous, or simply devolve into meme posting, while other times incredibly useful information can be gleaned from reading through these exchanges. Take for example whenever a new movie trailer drops. Reddit users pay attention. They'll comb frame by frame, searching for any Easter Eggs or potential secrets these trailers may hold. The recent trailer for Godzilla vs. Kong, the upcoming film where the titular monsters will duke it out for kaiju supremacy is no exception.
When it comes to the goods on the Godzilla vs. Kong trailer, oh boy, does Reddit have some spicy theories for the world to sink its teeth into, especially that Godzilla may actually be the villain this time around. Much of this line of thinking seems to have support from shots within the trailer, so it's worth taking a closer look for those who can't wait for their next dose of colossal creatures clashing on the big screen.

One wouldn't be incorrect in thinking that Reddit users might perhaps excel at sharpshooting, as they always seem to spot the smallest details in trailers. For example, in the new trailer for Godzilla vs. Kong, there is a brief glimpse of people running down a set of stairs into the subway, terrified by an attack from Godzilla. Or is it Godzilla? Pausing the trailer reveals that while the monster attacking the public does appear to be the shape of Godzilla, he's awfully shiny looking, as if his skin is made of metal. There's also a bit of a red glow near the top of his head.
Many speculate that this is actually Mecha Godzilla, and there's further evidence in the trailer to support this. Pausing again later on in the trailer around the 1:42 mark there is a screen behind one of the characters that seems to say something along the lines of "Battery Systems: Maximum Charge". Under these words appears to be an exoskeleton in the shape of Godzilla. There are also a few mentions of "unprovoked attacks" from Godzilla made by characters in the trailer.
These pieces all seem to point to the inclusion of Mecha Godzilla. Reddit collectively seems inclined to believe that Mecha Godzilla is making attacks that have necessitated the capture of King Kong. Kong is meant to battle and defeat Mecha Godzilla, but it appears from the trailer that the actual Godzilla has also taken notice of these attacks by his imposter. Some users believe that the two will end up joining forces in order to take down Mecha Godzilla together. They also posit that due to the mention in the trailer of an ancient war both Kong and Godzilla supposedly were involved in may actually be a reference to the two creature's ancestors. This has drawn humorous comparisons to the plot of Batman vs. Superman, as the monsters may realize their parents worked together in some form and then put aside their differences in order to save the day.
Drawing comparison to another superhero film, it's noticed that Kong has a new axe that is quite similar in appearance to Thor's Stormbreaker. While it's unlikely that this film has any connection with the MCU, there's one shot in the trailer that has fans excited. As Kong and Godzilla battle in the middle of a large city, Kong takes his axe and jumps into the air, ready to unleash a mighty swing at Godzilla. Godzilla releases a large blast of energy from his mouth, which is perfectly aimed at his primate foe. However, the axe actually seems to absorb the blast and protect Kong.
Users theorize that the absorptive properties of the axe actually may mean that the blade on this weapon is actually one of Godzilla's spikes. This would explain why it is able to conduct and seemingly absorb his blasts. If the theory that the real, non-mecha Godzilla and Kong are mistakenly fighting each other is true, then this axe and Godzilla's ability to charge it up could be the combination needed to defeat Mecha Godzilla. Additionally, while the trailer does show two separate blasts from Godzilla, there's an important difference between the shots that seems to lend credence to the plot speculation around the two monsters having to battle Mecha Godzilla later on.
The first time viewers see Godzilla attacking the people running into the subway system, he's simply emerging through a building and causing rubble to fall. The first shot where the audience can fully see Godzilla is in the middle of the ocean during the transport of Kong overseas. He can be seen completely here, and he fires off a large blast that Kong is just barely able to jump off of his boat in time to avoid.
It would make sense here that Godzilla is still perceived as the cause of the attacks going on, and that surrounded by water, their first encounter does not go well for Kong. However, he clearly lives to fight another day with his new axe when the second blast is shown. It's likely that the humans arm him with this newfound weaponry. The world will have to wait until the next trailer to speculate further, but from what has been shown so far it's likely that a clearly defined villain role for Mecha Godzilla, and hopefully, an epic team-up between Godzilla and Kong will be shown.
Godzilla vs. Kong will release in theaters and on HBO Max on March 26, 2021.
