It seems Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War’s RC-XD is now weaker after a change that went unmentioned in the Season 2 Reloaded patch notes.

Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War has been no stranger to stealth nerfs, as Treyarch has made several unmentioned changes to the game’s content since release. However, the latest Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War adjustment could prove controversial, as it shines a light on one of the game’s biggest balancing problems.

One of the most iconic Call of Duty scorestreaks, the RC-XD, has appeared in every Black Ops game since the 2010 original. Having a dedicated track on Nuketown and used heavily in the marketing for Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War, the streak retains its usual functionality. Players can control the small, explosive RC car, driving it directly in the direction of players before blowing it up. While this has almost always meant a one-hit kill, it seems that is no longer the case.

Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War’s Season 2 Reloaded update brought several new maps, modes, and cosmetics to the game. It also brought about a balancing pass, and while many of the changes focused on weaponry, one unmentioned alteration has seen the RC-XD nerfed heavily. As shown by Redditor deathdude01, the RC-XD is no longer a one-hit kill on all enemies. If players are equipped with a Flak Jacket, they can survive the car’s explosion from any distance.

In the Reddit user's clip, the car is parked directly below the intended target’s feet. Blowing it up only injures the victim, however, ensuring that Flak Jacket allows players to survive an attack from the remote control vehicle. With proximity now useless, and the scorestreak only killing those without Flak Jacket, there is little reason to run it. Considering the main purpose of this Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War scorestreak is to kill one or two enemies, this nerf seems like overkill.

This is the latest in a long string of cases where Flak Jacket has proven too strong, with the perk considered a must-use. Redditor KimchiNinjaTT, for example, believes that Flak Jacket should not protect from scorestreaks. KingBeezoR points out that this is the exact opposite of what fans wanted, while cavemold582 stated how odd it is to nerf a low point scorestreak that is rarely used in the first place.

While Treyarch has yet to clarify why this decision was made, it will be interesting to see if the studio makes another nerf to Flak Jacket. For now, though, the perk is used by nearly everyone in online games, meaning fans of the RC-XD may want to stop using it for a while.

Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War is available now on PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X.
