Destiny 2: Why Intrinsic Weapon Perks Can’t Work | Game Rant

Bungie reveals three reasons why perks such as Celerity and Bottomless Grief can never become unique intrinsic weapon stats in Destiny 2.

Mods have been one of the more discussed topics with the Destiny 2 community lately, with much of the talk centering on the Tower Gunsmith, Banshee-44. Many folks have not been thrilled at the daily rotating options being limited to two per day, which makes it difficult for players to obtain the mods they may have missed in past seasons. While Bungie has acknowledged the mod problem and even confirmed its something they're looking into, the team has nothing to share at the moment, unfortunately.

Adept weapons have also been in the spotlight recently as well. Fans have been asking Bungie to take two unique perks Celerity and Bottomless Grief and make them intrinsic level perks on Trials of Osiris and Nightfall specific weapons or even the Adept versions. In response to this request, Weapons Feature Lead Chris Proctor indicated that the ultimate idea behind Adept weapons was to give players tangible rewards to work towards, a minor power boost, and to make sure that players who can't earn the weapons don't feel like they can't compete with those that do have them.

While Proctor admitted that making perks like Celerity and Bottomless Grief into special intrinsic features is a cool idea, it's functionally impossible to do. The biggest reason is that Destiny 2 has a maximum number of perks that can be active on a character at a time. Most legendary weapons typically hit that limit so adding another on top of that without first taking one away not only would cause major performance issues, but likely have unforeseen consequences like random perks turning off.

Besides the random issues popping up, Proctor mentioned that continually adding new perks introduces power creep back into the game, something the studio has attempted to fix through methods like weapon sunsetting. Finally, adding special perks breaks the final rule of adept weapons, giving those who can get them an advantage over those who can't. One example given was a weapon that pairs Celerity with power perks like Outlaw and Rampage.

However, Bungie is planning on making a few adjustments to Nightfall and Trials weapons. For new drops of weapons after the start of Season 14, Bottomless Grief is a fixed alternate perk on the left column in addition to the randomly assigned perk upon it dropping. The perk also grants a permanent +30 to the weapon's magazine. Celerity is a permanent alternate perk on the right column for Trials weapons ad grants a permanently active +20 to the weapon's reload speed and handling.

In addition to Adept weapon perks, Bungie also revealed more season 14 mod changes including the return of former Black Armory merchant Ada-1. While Banshee is moving more towards weapons and special mods, ADA is taking over the armor side of things by selling mods, armor upgrade materials, and randomly rotating armor sets from the World Loot Pool.

Destiny 2 is available now on PC, PS4, PS5, Stadia, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S.
