POBG releases as a playable game inside the Steam version of PUBG despite originally being viewed as an April Fool's Day joke

On April Fool's Day, PlayerUnknown's Battlegrounds' official YouTube account released a mockumentary in a similar vein to the famous King of Kong documentary. It jokingly suggested that the popular battle royale was preceded by a relatively unknown 2D shooter called "POBG." Now, it's been revealed that POBG was not just an April Fool's joke, but an actual, playable game, and has been released in the Steam version of PUBG.

POBG, otherwise known as PlayerOmnom's Battlegrounds, is a 2D arcade-style shooter that pits players against chickens. The choice of enemies is an obvious nod to the victory celebration within PUBG that reads "winner winner chicken dinner." The newly released POBG features many of the weapons and items from PUBG but also offers the players various upgrades as well during their run. Unlike many arcade shooters, POBG also has bullet spread and dynamic crosshairs that mean spray-and-pray tactics won't cut it. As they progress through the stages, players will meet a host of odd chicken enemies including knife-wielding chickens and chickens hiding behind riot shields.

As PUBG Mobile passes a billion downloads, this neat addition of POBG to the desktop game is just another interesting treat. Even if the arcade-style gameplay is not to players' liking, it's at least a symbol of the company's dedication to bringing fresh and new content to their fans.

POBG is far from the only new release to come out of the PUBG franchise. The developers have also teased an upcoming futuristic game called PUBG: New State to be available on mobile. Tencent, developers of PUBG Mobile, have also teased a game that will pit players primarily against zombies called Undawn. Until then, fans will have plenty of time to battle against hoards of angry chickens.

POBG is currently available in the Steam version of PlayerUnknown's Battlegrounds.
