Nintendo's Animal Crossing: New Horizons reached its first anniversary last month, and there are plenty of active players even if the game isn't quite as big of a phenomenon as it was in March 2020. There are still updates planned, with Nintendo highlighting the return of New Horizons' cherry blossom trees in April 2021 amid Bunny Day celebrations. As players continue to log in, they will also use the game's creative systems to their advantage, with one fan recreating the intro from Super Smash Bros. on the Nintendo 64.
Thanks to custom outfits, island renovation, and sometimes clever editing tricks outside of the game, Animal Crossing: New Horizons players have made all kinds of references to video games and other pop culture staples over the last year. One stand-out example in recent memory is a Disney's Hercules song recreated in New Horizons, and the take on Super Smash Bros. uploaded by YouTuber Great-Bit Arcade on March 25 is similarly notable for the extra effort put in.

The intro for the original Smash Bros. game starts with Master Hand creating a mock battlefield using Nintendo toys and household items on a desk, and the ingenuity of Great-Bit Arcade's version shows itself right away as Master Hand is replaced by an Animal Crossing villager's ball-shaped one. It goes through every scene with custom character outfits to represent all but Mario and Luigi, who had official gear added to New Horizons last month, and most of its settings are built in-game.
Comparing the video to its counterpart from the N64 game shows great attention to detail, but considering Great-Bit Arcade's track record this isn't unexpected. The nearly 100,000-subscriber channel has a host of videos recreating things from television shows, movies, and other video games in Animal Crossing: New Horizons, from classic series like The Golden Girls to more modern offerings like Disney+'s Wandavision.
With the introductory scenes to Super Smash Bros. 64, Melee, and Brawl being as iconic as they are to many fans of the fighting game franchise, it makes sense someone would want to try translating them into Animal Crossing. A fan who goes by DJ-Dez previously worked on depicting every Super Smash Bros. Ultimate character in New Horizons, and Great-Bit Arcade credits them for providing the character costumes used in the video.
Individual fans are not the only ones to have taken on Animal Crossing amid its surge of popularity. Brands like Xbox commonly released themed merch in the game throughout 2020, and to celebrate its one-year anniversary Adult Swim created a stop motion-styled video mixing Rick and Morty with Animal Crossing: New Horizons.
Animal Crossing: New Horizons is available now on Nintendo Switch.
