Pokemon has released almost 900 of its monsters across 8 generations of games, making the amount that belong to each type difficult to keep track of.

Pokemon have types across eighteen different categories. With eight generations of Pokemon games to play and almost 900 pokemon, there's a lot to go through. Each type has some pure Pokemon but all have dual-types that gain an advantage in battle.

As the series continues to grow and new Pokemon forms are announced or new Pokemon are released, fans can expect the numbers for each of these types to grow.

•There are 115 normal-type Pokemon: 69 pure normal Pokemon and 46 dual-types.

Normal-type Pokemon have some of the most single-typed in all of the franchise. Even with such a large pool, the type’s prominent weakness against fighting-type can make them hard to use as competitive options.

•There are 75 fire-type Pokemon: 34 pure fire Pokemon and 41 dual-types.

Fire-type Pokemon have been iconic since the Pokemon series went international. Charizard Pokemon cards are coveted and it is one of the most recognizable Pokemon of all time, second only to Pikachu in fame. Fire-type has an advantage over grass, steel, and ice types, but the type’s weakness to water, ground, and rock makes counters extremely prevalent.

•There are a whopping 144 water-type Pokemon; 68 of these are pure water, while 76 of them are dual-types.

Water-type Pokemon make up the most in the National Pokedex. With a starter in each generation of games, like fire and grass, water-type Pokemon are easy to find. Water-type Pokemon also made appearances as game mascots from generations 1-4 with Blastiose for Pokemon Blue, Suicune for Pokemon Crystal, Kyogre for Pokemon Sapphire, and Palkia for Pokemon Pearl and now the gen 4 remake Pokemon Shining Pearl.

•Grass-type has 108 total Pokemon: 43 are pure grass and the remaining 65 are dual-types.

Grass-type Pokemon are always one of the three starters available in the series. Bulbasaur is the first grass-type Pokemon introduced in the Pokedex and, like Charmander and Squirtle, becomes one of Ash’s partners in the Pokemon anime.

•Rock-type has 65 total Pokemon; 13 of these are pure rock while the other 52 are dual-types.

Rock-type Pokemon have sometimes left a bit to be desired design-wise, but they have also resulted in the top tier designs for Stonjourner and Tyrantrum. Every Pokemon is going to have fans and critics regardless of how their concept is executed, but the rock type’s ability to be either a rock with arms, a T-Rex dragon, or Stonehenge has split some of the love that rock-type Pokemon receive. The type’s weaknesses to water, steel, ground, grass, and fighting make it an easy target in the competitive scene, but moves like Stealth Rock and Stone Edge with a same-type attack bonus help to make this type strong.

•There are 66 fighting-type Pokemon to battle with; 29 pure are pure fighting and 37 are dual-types.

Fighting types are often the physical brutes of the Pokemon franchise. Many of them are designed as straight forward martial arts Pokemon. This trend is noticeable with gen 1’s Hitmonlee and Hitmonchan, which are reminiscent of boxing and kickboxing respectively, as well as Gen 8’s Urshifu which is known as the Wushu Pokemon.

•96 Pokemon are psychic with 39 pure psychic Pokemon and 57 dual-type.

Psychic Pokemon are abundant and feature in one of the Pokemon anime’s greatest episodes, Abra and the Psychic Showdown. A strong typing in generation one, the psychic type includes powerhouses like Alakazam, Mewtwo, and Mew. The type is weak to ghost, dark, and bug, but dominates with strong special attacks and works well as a counter for fighting-type Pokemon.

•Ghost Pokemon have a population of 56, of these 14 are pure ghost and 42 are dual-types.

Ghost-type Pokemon are one of the two rarest types in the franchise. While there are some notable fan favorites like Gengar and the pseudo-legendary Pokemon for Pokemon Sword and Pokemon Shield, Dragapult, the restless Pokemon spirits do not always get the love they deserve. Ghost-type Pokemon which have an immunity to both fighting and normal type attacks, are one of only two types weak to itself.

•With 84 bug Pokemon, there are 19 pure bugs and 65 dual-types that have infested eight generations of Pokemon games.

Bug-type Pokemon are some of the most abundant types in the Pokemon series, and traveling through the games facing bug-catcher trainer after bug-catcher trainer only reaffirms this. Bug type often show up early in the games with straightforward evolutionary lines reminiscent of the real world. This aesthetic has led to cool designs like Centiskorch a dual-type fire and bug centipede styled Pookemon.

•There is a total of 71 poison-type Pokemon. 16 of these Pokemon are pure poison, and 55 of them are dual-type.

Poison-type Pokemon have gotten criticism for some of their less than appealing designs with Pokemon like Muk and Garbodor. This criticism, however, ignores some of the coolest Pokemon out there like Dragalge and Toxtricity.

•With 105 flying-type Pokemon in the Pokemon framchise, only 3 of them are pure flying, the other 102 are dual-type.

Flying-type Pokemon are not the staple they once were but still have some of the most typing combos. Since the introduction of easier ways to fast travel in Pokemon games, the Fly HM has been retired and the need for a dedicated flying Pokemon is no more. This change in the series has not stopped Pokemon from releasing merchandise for fan favorites like Corviknight and the infamous shiny Cramorant.

•Electric-type Pokemon shock trainers with 61 total electric Pokemon and an almost even split of 32 pure electric Pokemon and 29 dual-type Pokemon.

Electric-type Pokemon have become what the series has been built around from overpowered Pokemon that deliver lightning-fast sweeps like Tapu Koko to Pikachu as Ash’s number one partner and the franchise’s most prominent mascot. Many fans can relate to being a kid, and even though some parent’s might not have known a single Pokemon, Pikachu’s electric personality and character was still instantly recognizable.

•With 69 ground-type Pokemon, only 17 are pure ground while the other 52 are dual-type pokemon.

Ground-type Pokemon are the natural counter to electric Pokemon, as they have immunity to electric type moves as well as their own moves being super effective against electric, rock, fire, poison, and steel type Pokemon. The typing benefits a number of dual-type Pokemon like Swampert’s evolutionary line of water and ground Pokemon who become immune to electric-type attacks, though a quadruple weakness to grass type attacks is gained in exchange. The sought after mythical Pokemon Landorus also becomes immune to flying's weakness of electricity this way but gains a quadruple weakness to ice-type attacks instead.

•There are 51 ice-type Pokemon; 18 are pure ice and 33 are dual-type Pokemon.

Ice-type Pokemon are often elegant in design, and the first counter in the series for dragon-type Pokemon that wasn’t other dragon-type Pokemon. The type has had some unique combinations and is responsible for another of Ash’s memorable companions in the Pokemon anime, Lapras. The most recent unique dual-type ice Pokemon is Frosmoth, whose evolutionary line contains the only dual ice and bug types in the franchise.

•Dragon-type Pokemon have 61 species; there are 13 pure dragons and 48 dual-type dragons.

Dragon-type Pokemon are the Pokemon of legends. Many of the final evolutions of dragon type lines are the strongest Pokemon that can be caught and favorites for competitive teams. Of the nine pseudo-legendary Pokemon across eight games, seven are dragon-type Pokemon. This list includes the first generation’s lovable Dragonite and the generation 8's ghastly Dragapult.

•Dark-types match fighting-type with a total of 66 Pokemon; 13 are pure dark Pokemon and 53 are dual-type.

Dark-type Pokemon are one of three types that were added after the series' first generation of games. Debuting in Pokemon Gold and Pokemon Silver with the eeveelution Umbreon, the type has added 66 Pokemon to the series. Sneasel, a dark type in generation 2, wouldn’t get an evolution until Pokemon Diamond and Pokemon Pearl were released and Weavile was introduced. Weavile has the highest tied speed stat for any dark-type Pokemon, along with the legendary Pokemon Darkrai that was introduced in the same generation.

•There have been 64 steel type since they appeared in gen 2; 11 are pure steel with no rut while 53 are dual-type.

Steel-type Pokemon is another typing that was introduced after the first generation of Pokemon games, making its debut in Pokemon Gold and Pokemon Silver. The introduction of steel-type Pokemon came with the Metal Coat item which allowed a couple of first generation Pokemon to evolve. Both Onix and Scyther are Pokemon that players can evolve when they are traded holding the Metal Coat item. Onix and Scyther will evolve into Steelix and Scizor, respectively, but it's also just as important to trade them back to the game players want them in. Otherwise, they may be missing from the pokedex.

•The newest type, fairies, have 59 Pokemon; 19 are pure fairy while 40 are dual type.

Fairy-type Pokemon are the most recent type added to the series. Debuting in Pokemon X and Pokemon Y, the type was used as an instant counter to the strong dragon-type Pokemon. With only two weaknesses and an immunity to dragon-type moves, while being super effective against dragons, fairy-type Pokemon quickly found spots on many teams. The introduction of fairy-type Pokemon also saw several existing Pokemon have their typing changed, to either be or include fairy-type. Fairy-type is the only one of the three Pokemon types that have been introduced since generation one’s release to completely change a Pokemon’s typing as well, with several normal type Pokemon becoming pure fairy type.

Pokemon Sword and Shield are available now for Switch.
