A crafty usage of a feature included by default in Nvidia GPUs provides interesting results when used during a solo campaign in Outriders.

As the month of April began, Outriders became one of the early "must play" titles of 2021, exceeding many expectations relating to the growing "RPG Shooter" genre in its first week. The developers of OutridersPeople Can Fly, previously worked on cult-classic first-person shooters Painkiller and Bulletstorm, and used its knowledge from them to create its version of the ideal shooter.

While reception for the game has been mostly positive, several decisions including its online-only environment have been met with criticism. On the weekend of its launch, the servers were shut down for prolonged periods of time, causing enough dissatisfaction with players that some took to Steam to air out their grievances. While Outriders continues to work out the problems caused by the load on its servers, it seems the developers may have to look toward another matter involving their online-only formula.

Currently, the servers for Outriders remain stable, effectively satisfying the player base from criticism involving uptime. However, one feature that is obvious to online-only games is the lack of the ability to pause the game. As everything online is in real-time, the ability to pause the gameplay around a player would be next-to impossible without any external sources. According to Redditor Aced-Bread, one external source is something that almost everyone with an Nvidia GPU has access to.

By pressing Alt+F2 in-game, a player can enter Ansel, which is Nvidia's way of capturing screenshots in-game. The way Ansel works is that it freezes the game, enabling a "camera mode" that gives the player the opportunity to find the perfect angle for a photoshoot. This makes it so games that support Ansel, like Outriders can effectively pause the game, preventing events like cheap enemy kills when a player has to step away for a prolonged period of time.

The limits to Ansel only pause the game environment and not the game itself, thus limiting the "pause" feature to solo gameplay. In co-op, as the player is matched with others, the other players move independent from Ansel's screen capture, effectively rendering Ansel useless in a "time freezing" sense.

As this was not the original intention for Ansel, it's uncertain if People Can Fly will address this in a future hotfix. Solo players who wish to take a five-minute break, however, can rest easy knowing that the Outriders character they spent hours on won't meet a cheap death unbeknownst to them.

Outriders is available now on PC, PS4, PS5, Stadia, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S.
