Call of Duty: Warzone players have been venting their frustrations about Roze’s Rook skin for months now, and it is easy to understand why.

Even the most passionate Call of Duty: Warzone fan can argue that the game has had its share of nagging issues. Bugs like the stim glitch have appeared a half-dozen times, while the prevalence of the invisibility bug has seen attack helicopters completely removed on two separate occasions. Frustrating metas last for ages, while cheaters are always making fresh accounts to snag some unfair wins. Among the bugs, cheaters, balancing complaints sits a unique problem: the “Rook” skin for Roze.

While Roze is a popular Operator amongst Call of Duty: Warzone fans due to her interesting character design and voice, this cosmetic item has seen a massive amount of hate thrown its way. The outrage is justified, however, as the skin offers an unfair advantage over other items. Bringing the Call of Duty: Warzone community together in a way that few other issues have, the reaction to the outfit has been just as spectacular as the lack of a fix for the costume.

The thing that makes the Rook skin so broken is just how well it disguises Roze. When the Rook outfit is equipped, every bit of the Operator is covered in black clothing. From head to toe, dark material can be seen, with Roze’s face also covered in a shadowy mask. With the Operator also adding makeup around her eyes, even those do not stand out clearly, with the skin being completely obscured in dark environments. Unfortunately, Call of Duty: Warzone has a lot of those, and many players are perfectly fine with taking advantage of the camouflage the skin provides them with.

With Verdansk’s interior lighting being limited, players that crouch in the corners of buildings can hardly be seen by enemies. Buildings also feature a number of staircases, with Roze players able to hide out under the bottom flight. Completely blending in with the background while also having a clear line of sight on those that come through the front door or approach from the sides, these spots are a major issue when combined with the dark skin. Unsurprisingly, fans of Roze and this skin know this, equipping the skin and hiding out whenever possible.

Another issue with the skin is that players can only combat the issue on one platform. As shown by YouTuber JackFrags, the use of Nvidia filters in Call of Duty: Warzone will allow players to brighten up dark areas and easily spot someone wearing the Rook skin. While this is a major plus for those on PC, players on Xbox or PlayStation consoles have no such ability. In turn, they have no surefire way to protect themselves against the skin, suffering from the Roze-related problem even more than those on PC do. This has led to players being even more vocal about a fix, with many wanting the skin out of the game entirely. However, with the skin being content that was paid for, this seems unlikely.

No matter where Call of Duty: Warzone fans go to discuss the game, they will surely be able to find a massive number of posts tied to the skin. Recently, Roze skin memes have become increasingly popular with the game’s community, as many are trying to make light of the situation. Other players have fallen victim to the skin, so much so that a community of Rook skin sprayers has formed. Whenever a match begins, fans will go looking for enemies in the Rook skin. They will then spray them with a light colored spray, ensuring that they stand out clearly for the duration of the match.

Call of Duty: Warzone fans have also boycotted the Rook skin, with a special hashtag created for the protest. Titled #ProtestTheRoze, the movement sees players wearing the brightest colored skins that they have in their inventory. Kickstarted by a Redditor posting a video where a finishing move is performed on a Rook skin-wearer, the campaign has done decently well so far. While fans are taking some lighthearted approaches to venting their frustration, there is no shortage of clips where fans rage over the outfit.

One of these angry players is none other than The Two Time himself, as Dr Disrespect recently raged after being killed by a Roze player. Chasing the enemy off of the Superstore rooftop, the streamer lost sight of them, as their dark skin allowed them to easily blend in with the shadows cast by the building above. The player then killed a confused Dr Disrespect, with the event leading the content creator to vent his frustrations about the overpowered alternate outfit. Sure enough, the clip made the rounds, as fans once again had a perfect example as to why the skin is so unfair.

Perhaps the most frustrating issue with the pay-to-win Roze outfit is the lack of a proper fix. Added to the game back in Season 5 of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare, which took place in August 2020, complaints have raged about the costume. Originally unlocked as part of the battle pass, a massive number of players have unlocked the outfit. Worse, a similar skin was purchasable via Roze’s Operator bundle through much of Season 5, as the “Near Dark” skin provides the same type of advantage as the Rook outfit.

Despite the skin no longer being purchasable by players, the bundle briefly re-appeared in the store back in February. This allowed even more players to buy and exploit the outfit, making Call of Duty: Warzone matches even more frustrating. While a fix was promised back in February, the skin is continuing to cause problems for players in April. No ETA has been provided for when changes to the skin will take effect or what these alterations to the outfit will be, though players can expect Raven Software to brighten up the outfit in some way.

Hopefully, some kind of permanent fix for the Roze costume comes soon. Considering that players are rejoicing whenever they see the skin glitch out and Christmas lights appear on Roze players, it is safe to say that change is long overdue. While there are plenty of other things that need to be addressed within Call of Duty: Warzone, the Rook skin needs to take priority. Players have suffered for over year, and while clever boycotts and cute memes are fun, this cosmetic has become a genuine problem that negatively impacts the quality of the game.

Call of Duty: Warzone is available now on PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X.
