Hunting is one of the most important skills to master in Red Dead Online. Gamers will receive pelts and meat from skinned animals, which will help with overall progression in the game. Players can use pelts to craft both gear and furniture. Players will need to hunt legendary animals to craft legendary outfits and trinkets.

Even experienced players make key mistakes while hunting in Red Dead Online. Finding the right animals to hunt, and executing an effective hunting strategy is easier said than done. Below are some of the mistakes Red Dead players will want to avoid while on the hunt.
10 Hoarding Low-Quality Pelts
There are three tiers of pelts in Red Dead, and players will want to hunt animals that are at least tier two quality. The Bison provides a quality pelt, for example. Low-quality pelts are not used in recipes or gear builds, making them essentially useless. Gamers will often collect a lot of low-quality pelts before realizing that all their hard work was pointless.
Players can farm tier two pelts, or search for the highest quality animals. While aiming down sight with a scope or binoculars, the star or tier of the animal is displayed at the bottom right corner of the screen.
9 Using The Same Weapon for All Species
Each animal in Red Dead should be killed with a particular weapon. The Rocky Mountain Bull Elk must be killed by a long scoped rifle for example. In-game, players can pull up info on the animal by pressing either RB (Xbox) or R1 (PS). The animal information will include which weapon class is needed for a clean kill. Using the wrong weapon or ammunition can affect the quality of the pelt.
8 Inaccurate Shots
While hunting, every player should make sure they are hitting headshots. Shooting an animal in the midsection or limb can spoil the meat and reduce the quality of the pelt.

Gamers can simply turn on Deadeye to get a headshot on every animal every time. It is equally important to down the animal in one shot. The longer an animal is alive after taking damage, the lower the quality of the loot.
7 Poor Preparation
Every Red Dead player needs to have the appropriate weapons before leaving their horse. Having the right gun will make sure that players do not miss good opportunities while traveling to and from their saddles. Additionally, gunslingers should always apply scent masking cream to limit the number of animals that are spooked by the presence of the player. The cream can be purchased from any general store.
6 Hunting Without Scouting
Gamers must scout before they begin to track a pack of animals. Scouting will allow players to identify the best animal in the pack, which weapon to use, and the best angle of approach. At more than 100 meters, gamers can rest assured that they will not alert the animal to their position. Red Dead players that scout before approaching animals will have more success.
5 Forgetting To Call The Animal
Red Dead hunters should always use the call button to attract the attention of an animal before shooting. Gamers should only call when they are ready to shoot. By calling the animal, it will look in the player's direction, which will give them an easy headshot. Inexperienced hunters can combine the call with deadeye to secure a perfect shot.
4 The Mindless Wanderer
The world map is an incredible resource for hunters that are looking for a particular species. As outlaws explore more and more of the map, each species that was encountered will appear on the map.

Not using this feature is foolish, especially on a map as big as the one in Red Dead Online. Gamers will spend much less time wandering around by traveling to these marked locations.
3 Hunting In High Traffic Areas Without Lures
Near roads and towns, animals can be scared away by hundreds of different things. These areas are the most difficult places to hunt near. However, it may be one of the few locations on the map that the targeted animal spawns.
Hunters in these areas should be using bait and lures to attract the intended species. All players have to do is set the bait, move away 20 or so meters, and crouch while waiting for the animals. Nine times out of ten the animal will appear within a few minutes.
2 Forgetting To Skin A Legendary Animal
Once a legendary animal is killed in Red Dead, it will never respawn again. Players that kill one of them need to make sure they skin the animal and collect its meat before doing anything else. Achievement seekers need to keep this in mind when attempting to collect all of the legendary pelts. Those people could have killed a legendary animal early in the game, and it will not reappear.
1 Other Legendary Mistakes
The first legendary animal players will encounter is a legendary bear. The bear has a lot of health and will probably kill players with just one hit. Hunters need to be especially careful when taking on this animal. Additionally, players will acquire a map of legendary animals that should be used when hunting these creatures. When players are in the general territory of the animal, a notification will appear.
Once in the correct zone, players should not just roam the area looking for the animal. Instead, they need to find clues that are scattered throughout the general vicinity of the legendary animal. The clues will lead players to the animal. There are also no pelt ratings for legendary animals, so hunters should use the most powerful weapons at their disposal.
