Even after being out for nearly five months, the popularity and demand for the PS5 has remained fundamentally unchanged. From scalpers reselling the console at an increased price to inventory at major online and physical retailers being sold out mere minutes after the console has been restocked, the seemingly simple act of buying a PS5 has become a game unto itself. Although, in less than five months, the PS5 has already been able to outsell a few gaming consoles in the UK.
In spite of the Xbox Series X beating the PS5 and Switch in UK hardware sales during January 2021, the PS5 has still managed to garner a great deal of success in the UK. As official sales figures continue to be made public, a lot of gaming enthusiasts and journalists have started to compare and contrast PS5 console sales to previous platforms. In fact, the head of GamesIndustry.biz has made a surprising discovery.

Christopher Dring, who has also done work for major BBC publications, has noticed that in less than five months the PS5 has outsold the Wii U, the PlayStation Vita, and the Sega Dreamcast in the UK. To put things in perspective, each of those consoles had commercial runs lasting several years. In terms of the PS Vita, its lifespan was over nine years, and in less than half a year, the PS5 has managed to surpass those sales, at least in the UK.
It is amazing how much widespread success the PS5 has achieved in such a short amount of time, though, it does beg to question how long it will take before simply purchasing a PS5 becomes less of an impossible task. With PS5 scalpers buying up a significant portion of the console stock and with all of the complications involved with ordering online, let alone buying the console at a retail outlet, it seems like the demand for the PS5 isn't going to disappear anytime soon.
Then again, it's not as if there's no reason behind why there's so much demand for the PS5. Given the ongoing effects of COVID-19, with many individuals and families still quarantining, the demand for next-gen gaming hardware could not be much higher. Therefore, once things start to hopefully resolve themselves, it seems likely that purchasing a PS5 won't be nearly as taxing.
It will be interesting to see how much more success the PS5 achieves in the coming years. There's a cacophony of highly anticipated titles releasing for the system in the coming months, such as Resident Evil Village and Far Cry 6. However, what a lot of people are really looking forward to is the release of Sony exclusive titles such as God of War: Ragnarok and Horizon Forbidden West. With any luck, the PS5 will continue to find success all throughout the world.
