After the introduction of Nightsister Merrin in Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order, there's a strong case for her to be playable in a sequel.

Merrin is a unique character who instantly conjures a sense of mystery when she is introduced in Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order. As a member of the Nightsisters, she was taught how to harness her Force abilities and draw on the Dark Side. This predisposition to use the Dark Side would generally put Merrin at odds with the Jedi. Instead, as the story unfolds in Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order, players and Cal Kestis come to realize she only wants to reclaim her home after Taron Malicos has taken control of the Nightbrothers.

As one of the few Nightsisters to survive the slaughter of the witches by General Grievous and his forces, she believed herself to be alone. The loss that Merrin feels is easy to sympathize with as both Cal Kestis and Cere Junda, as well as all Jedi, have had their people massacred. The connection that Cal feels with Merrin leads to their cooperation with one another and the ultimate defeat of Taron Malicos.

Though Merrin’s powers do come from the Dark Side, she ultimately joins the Mantis crew for the remainder of Jedi: Fallen Order’s story. Over time, she bonds with them and continues to be of help as they work to save a holocron from the Second Sister and Inquisitors. For the second game, as she's likely to remain a vital character, it would be nice to actually step in her shoes.

Merrin’s continued membership with the Mantis crew in Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order takes it to the next level for role-playing. While she is not playable in the game, that doesn’t mean she couldn’t be an excellent choice as a playable character in a sequel due to a unique background. While some fans will be familiar with the Nightsisters' powers thanks to the animated Star Wars shows like Star Wars: The Clone Wars, there’s still a lot that can be shown off.

On top of this, Merrin’s own trauma is only explored slightly in Jedi: Fallen Order. While players are told about what happens to the Nightsisters, as well as shown the Dark Jedi that Malicos becomes, the exploration of her as a character is minimal. If players are given the option of Merrin as a playable character in a Jedi: Fallen Order sequel, it could provide plenty of room for her growth and offer a bigger role for Merrin in Jedi: Fallen Order 2. With the lack of understanding that Cal has of Merrin’s powers, there is an incredibly open opportunity to delve deep into this aspect of the force and show how Merrin became who she is.

While a lot of Star Wars character concepts can go unused, Merrin could shine in a couple of ways by adapting her to the world around her. Each of the Zeffo tombs in Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order contain puzzles for the player to solve. While the tombs do a give a brief break from the fight against the Galactic Empire to learn more about some of the galaxies more ancient inhabitants, they all require new skills for players to traverse through them. The puzzles served this purpose to introduce players to Cal’s new force powers well, and a similar mechanic in a sequel could benefit Merrin’s character.

This approach wouldn’t have to be the sole focus, after all the series is Star Wars Jedi, but it could help add depth to a fascinating character. The original Jedi: Fallen Order does a tremendous job when it taps into Cere Junda and her past. It explores her relationship with the Jedi Order, the execution of Order 66, and juxtaposes the fate of her and her Padawan. The game unfortunately does not give Merrin the same level of interest. Players must take her story at face value with the only events remotely centered around her occurring with Taron Malicos. There's no real comparison to other Star Wars characters.

If Merrin is brought into the core game through puzzles, it could also help develop Cal’s own force powers more. It feels natural that even with Merrin as a playable character, Cal would continue to be the primary focus of the game. Though he did rediscover his powers and learn a lot from Cere’s tutelage, she still has herself cut off from the Force. Cere's fear of the Dark Side greatly limits what more she will be able to teach Cal and guide him through, so addressing this fact could greatly affect Cal as a Jedi as well as his relationship with Cere and the Force.

Merrin could then be a complimentary opposite to Cere and fill the role she might leave behind in such an instance. Even in Jedi: Fallen Order, Merrin shows players that she is confident in her abilities and doesn’t fear the Dark side. She is able to join the Jedi on their mission to save the holocron from the Second Sister without turning dark. This shows a possible path that allows one to balance themselves between the Light and Dark Sides of the Force.

This could also help show how Jedi can adapt as the Jedi Order’s fall is in large because it could not change with the universe around it. Even after a more than a thousand years. it was expected that members live strict lives. Without formal orders to guide Cal or Merrin, they would be able to choose their own paths. Neither one would have to live with the scrutiny of their more orthodox elders, and both could be set on a complimentary adventure that reveals new truths to fans and players. With new games like Ubisoft's open world Star Wars game, it could be a great time to take a chances on as story like this.

Much of the galaxy in the Star Wars franchise remains unexplored by both the Republic and the Empire. With no expectations for Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order to influence the franchise’s core canon, a voyage into the unknown may be the best option. There are many ways to wield the Force and even more planets and characters to be introduced. With the strength of the lore in the first game the exploration of more Zeffo ruins, or a new species all together, could be a fantastic way to introduce Cal to the Dark Side and influence Merrin to pick up aspects of the Light.

Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order is available on PC, PS4, Stadia, and Xbox One.
