Phantump is a dual ghost and grass-type Pokemon with a sad backstory that can be found and evolved in Pokemon Sword and Shield- here's how to do it.

Throughout the years there have been a number of spooky Ghost-type Pokemon, with many of them available in Pokemon Sword and Pokemon Shield. Two of these Pokemon are Phantump and its evolution, Trevenant.

The entirety of the Phantump evolutionary line can be found in Pokemon Sword and Shield in multiple locations. Even more of these locations are available if players have access to the Crown Tundra DLC.

Due to Phantump and Trevenant's typings, both Pokemon are weak to Flying, Ghost, Fire, Ice, and Dark-type moves. Both can also resist Ground, Water, Grass, and Electric-type moves, with them being completely immune to Normal and Fighting-type moves.

For those playing the base game for Pokemon Sword and Shield, there are a few different places where Phantump can spawn. It can be found as an encounter in tall grass in Glimwood Tangle, and can also be found as an encounter in a Max Raid Battle in Dappled Grove (northern-most den), Watchtower Ruins (northern-most den), Stony Wilderness (northeastern-most den), and Giant's Mirror (southern-most den).

If players have the Crown Tundra DLC expansion, there are a few more places where Phantump can be found. Phantump can be seen and encountered in the overworld in the Crown Tundra's Slippery Slope, Old Cemetery, Snowslide Slope, Giant's Foot, and Three-Point Pass. This Pokemon can also be found as an encounter in tall grass in all of these locations except for Slippery Slope.

In order to evolve Phantump into Trevenant, players need to trade it to another player. This will cause the Pokemon to evolve upon being received by the other player. For this reason, it is highly recommended for players to do this with another trusted player if they want their Pokemon back.

Trevenant can also be caught by players without needing to be evolved from Phantump. It shares the same raid locations as Phantump and can appear as a wanderer in the Crown Tundra's Slippery Slope, Old Cemetery, and Snowslide Slope. Players can also encounter one in the Max Lair when participating in Dynamax Adventure.

What makes this line of Pokemon so interesting is the lore behind them revealed in various Pokedex entries. According to this lore, Phantumps are born from the spirits of dead children who died while lost in the forest. Even their cries are meant to sound like screaming children. Meanwhile, Trevenant traps and eats any people that harms the forest it resides in.

Pokemon Sword and Pokemon Shield are now available exclusively for the Nintendo Switch.
