Pokemon GO players have access to multiple sets of special research tasks that can net them all sorts of valuable rewards. While these rewards vary based on the series of tasks, some of them allow players to encounter and catch rare Mythical Pokemon.
Jirachi is a Mythical Pokemon in Pokemon GO that can only be obtained through a series of special research tasks known as A Thousand-Year Slumber. Before players can catch it, however, they will need to complete all of the tasks involved.

There are a total of seven steps to A Thousand-Year Slumber, with each having three tasks to complete. The only exception to this is the seventh and final step, which only exists to give players additional rewards for completion without and further tasks to complete.
The first step of A Thousand-Year Slumber is the easiest. Its tasks and rewards are:
- Catch 25 Pokemon - 1,000 XP
- Spin ten PokeStops or Gyms - Jigglypuff encounter
- Make three new friends - Feebas encounter
By completing the first step, players will be rewarded with one Mossy Lure, one Magnetic Lure, and one Glacial Lure. Players who are struggling with adding players to their friend list, especially during this time, are recommended to put their friend QR code on social media or connect with local Pokemon GO groups online to add friends.
Step two of these tasks begins to up the difficulty with players needing to actively hunt for specific Pokemon. These tasks are:
- Catch three Whismur - Ten Whismur candies
- Evolve a Feebas - 1,500 XP
- Have a Gold Hoenn medal - 1,500 XP
Completing step two will give players 2,000 Stardust, ten Pokeballs, and three Lures. In order to get a Gold Hoenn medal, players will need to register at least 90 Pokemon that originated from the Hoenn region in their Pokedex.
Up next is step three, but the tasks for this step are a lot easier than the previous step's tasks. They are:
- Take a snapshot of a Loudred - Snorlax encounter
- Make three great throws in a row - 2,000 XP
- Earn three candies walking with your buddy - 2,000 XP
After players complete these tasks, they will get 20 Silver Pinap Berries, three Star Pieces, and 2,000 Stardust. With Loudred being the evolution of Whismur, it should be easy to evolve one and take a picture of one for the first task.
Step four has the potential to eat up a lot of time for players actively pursuing this special research. Its tasks are:
- Catch 50 Psychic or Steel-type Pokemon - 2,500 XP
- Power up Pokemon ten times - 2,500 XP
- Send ten gifts to friends - 2,500 XP
Players will get a Fast TM, a Charged TM, and a Premium Raid Pass after completing step four. Using the Magnetic Lure earned earlier can help players find more Steel-type Pokemon for this task if they use it on a PokeStop.
The next step is step five where players will need to be prepared to have some tough battles. The tasks are:
- Battle a team leader three times - Kricketune encounter
- Win against another trainer seven times - 3,000 XP
- Win five raids - 3,000 XP
Completing these tasks will award players with three Rare Candies, 20 Ultra Balls, and 3,000 Stardust. It doesn't matter what raid players beat for the third task, so players can feel free to participate among large groups or take down one-star raids by themselves.
Step six is the final step that requires players to complete any kind of task. These final tasks are:
- Take five photos of Psychic or Steel-type Pokemon - Chimecho encounter
- Make three excellent curveball throws - Bronzong encounter
- Spin a PokeStop or Gym seven days in a row
This step's completion will give players 10 Silver Pinap Berries, 10 Star Pieces, and 5,000 Stardust. All that is left at this point is step seven which will just give players 13,500 XP, an encounter with Jirachi, 20 Jirachi candies, and a Jirachi shirt for their in-game avatar.
