Hideo Kojima Has A Book Coming Out In English

Written by

Hideo Kojima is one of the most high-profile individual developers in the game industry. With major successes to his credit like Death Stranding and the entire Metal Gear series, it makes sense that people are interested in his creative process and what inspires him. In fact, he already wrote a book on the topic, which was called The Gifted Gene and my Lovable Memes when it originally released. But since this collection of essays was written in Japanese, many of Kojima's fans around the world had to miss out on his insights ... but that will be changing soon.

Today, Viz Media announced that it will publish Kojima's book in English later this year. It will be retitled The Creative Gene, and is scheduled to release in the fall. You can see the reveal (which came alongside news of an Animal Crossing manga) below:

That initial reveal is light on details, but Polygon dives deeper with the book's official synopsis, which reads:

Ever since he was a child, Metal Gear Solid and Death Stranding creator Hideo Kojima was a voracious consumer of movies, music, and books. They ignited his passion for stories and storytelling, and the results can be seen in his groundbreaking, iconic video games. Now the head of independent studio Kojima Productions, Kojima’s enthusiasm for entertainment media has never waned. This collection of essays explores some of the inspirations behind one of the titans of the video game industry, and offers an exclusive insight into one of the brightest minds in pop culture.

I interviewed Kojima during the 2019 Tokyo Game Show, and he definitely has an interesting perspective on art and how people interact with it. For instance, when I asked him about what he hoped players would be thinking about once they finished Death Stranding and were watching the credits, his response (in part) was: "If you climb Mt. Fuji to see the rising of the sun – in Japan a lot of people do that – it’s really tough to climb to the top. On the way, some people might abort. But once you’re on the top, and you can see the mountain, people just cry. Same with our game; people who don’t make it to the end won’t be really moved. Of course, I left that up to the players."

You can read that full interview (which was conducted shortly before Death Stranding's release) right here. And for more of Hideo Kojima's thoughts, keep an eye on The Creative Gene's launch later this year.

With Destiny 2: Beyond Light's Season of the Chosen officially kicked off, Guardians are taking to the Battlegrounds and completing Exotic quests as if the alliance with the Cabal depends on it (it does). That being said, some players noticed a reference set within the in-game challenges that harkened back to a slogan used by Nazi Germany. The likeness sparked a larger conversation on social media, and Bungie immediately apologized for the unintentional similarity regarding the Cabal and real-world history.

It began with a new set of weekly challenges for Season of the Chosen. One of the challenges was called "Blood and Honor." Given the aesthetic nature of the Cabal, a name like Blood and Honor seems pretty standard for more fantasy-driven fictional stories. It didn't take long, however, before some players noticed that the this phrase in German is "Blut and Ehre," which was a slogan infamously worn by the Hitler Youth.

Just to be sure I didn't imagine it last week, I took a screen grab of the bounty challenge completion banner that says 'Blood and Honor'. Once again, I call on @Bungie to recognize and replace this N*zi slogan. @A_dmg04 @Cozmo23 https://t.co/tNIvO283G7 pic.twitter.com/TuIKUbwnEO

The name association was pointed out on Twitter, asking for Bungie to "recognize and replace this N*zi slogan." The same player raised concerns (which quickly went viral) over an in-game challenge in relation to the event it slots with – Battlegrounds: Cleansing. This event is a PvE endgame exercise that has players fight through hordes of Cabal enemies only to down a boss and loot chests with Cabal Gold. That association was also a cause for concern, and Bungie quickly addressed it.

In a statement made to Kotakuthe site that initially reported on the controversial war table find, a Bungie spokesperson offered up the below statement regarding the unintentional inclusion with a promise of termination:

"Any connection to anti-Semitism in Destiny is completely unintentional. Bungie is emphatically committed to inclusion and human rights, and will never stand for anti-Semitism. We are already preparing fixes in an upcoming patch. We apologize to all of our players that were hurt by the references, and we are grateful to our community for bringing their concerns to our attention."

With the Super Mario event in Animal Crossing: New Horizons and tons more content throughout the year, fans of the adorable simulator series have a lot to enjoy. For those looking for even more ways to celebrate the Nintendo franchise, Viz Media has announced the Animal Crossing: New Horizons manga that will be coming to the West, fully translated.

The Animal Crossing: New Horizons manga is officially getting an English translation, expected to drop on September 14. The first entry, titled Deserted Island Diary, will launch on that day, with more volumes to come later. The story will bring back familiar faces from the beloved IP to see what life is like for the villagers surviving life on a deserted island.

This manga is not new for fans in Japan. The first of two series launched back in February of last year as part of Ciao Magazine. For hardcore lovers of all things Animal Crossing, previous manga adaptations for the earlier games are also available both from Wild World and New Leaf.

Animal Crossing: New Horizons was a massive hit right out of the gate for Nintendo, with a launch coinciding alongside the start of global stay-at-home orders due to the ongoing pandemic with COVID-19. The peaceful simulator offered a sense of much-needed calm and purpose when many craved it, and even offered an enticing escape for those previously unfamiliar with the series.

If the September wait is too far off, there is still much to do on these islands. Most recently, players were able to participate in Festivale for a sense of celebration and vibrantly colored liberation. Mario fans can also join in on the fun with the special Super Mario event that blends two Nintendo favorites into one experience.

How do you like all of the recent events in-game and the upcoming Animal Crossing: New Horizons manga? If you could adapt any game into a manga series, what would it be? Shout out those hot takes in the comment section below loud and proud; let's hear those thoughts!
