EA has confirmed that the upcoming Switch release of Apex Legends was done by Panic Button, known for their impressive Switch ports of DOOM.

After months of leaks and rumors about the subject, EA has finally confirmed that Apex Legends will be coming to Nintendo Switch on March 9th, 2021. This highly popular free-to-play battle royale hitting the Switch is a major achievement, considering the only other platforms it is available on are PC, PlayStation, and Xbox consoles. Along with this announcement, fans have also learned that Panic Button is developing this re-release.

Panic Button is known for its work on several of the most impressive Switch ports so far, including similarly advanced titles such as Wolfenstein II: The New Colossus, DOOM, and DOOM Eternal. Them handling the port of Apex Legends is no surprise, as the studio's immense talent has been more than proven by now. Truly, Panic Button's ability to port next-generation titles to much less powerful hardware is unparalleled.

Apex Legends originally comes from the studio Respawn, also known for its work on the critically acclaimed Titanfall series. The game has found immense success since it launched in 2019, so the Nintendo Switch's audience being able to experience it should be a great way to further expand the audience. The Switch release will contain full cross-platform play with the PC, PlayStation, and Xbox releases, alongside the same seasonal content and features from other versions. For returning players, Season 8 of Apex Legends has just begun, so those that might not have played for a while will have a new trove of content to discover.

Feature parity is an essential element of multiplayer cross-platform titles such as these, so it's comforting to know that EA, Respawn, and Panic Button are trying to give Switch players the best experience possible. The only possible drawback in a Switch release is that it might not run as well as the other versions, as similarly action-packed shooter Overwatch runs at 30 frames per second on Switch compared to 60 frames per second on other platforms. However, being able to play Apex Legends on the go may be worth that compromise. While EA has confirmed that a mobile port of Apex Legends is in the works, it is confirmed not to release until 2022, so this Switch release gives fans a portable Apex fix in the meantime.

Apex Legends will soon be one of the few EA games to release on Switch. Despite record sales for the Nintendo Switch, EA has been oddly reluctant to bring over many of its major titles, so one can only hope that Apex Legends is the first of many more ports to Nintendo's hybrid console.

Apex Legends is available now for PC, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X|S. The Nintendo Switch version will release on March 9th, 2021.
