Team Ladybug's Metroidvania Touhou Luna Nights hits an impressive milestone after three years on the market across multiple platforms.

Touhou Luna Nights has just hit a nice milestone for itself three years after it launched in August 2018. The Metroidvania developed by Team Ladybug and published by PLAYISM and Why So Serious? has an overwhelmingly positive score from players on Steam, and now it has a quarter of a million units sold to go with that success.

After entering Early Access in 2018, Touhou Luna Nights released its 1.0 version in February 2019 on PC. Console versions followed in 2020, including an Xbox Game Pass version of Touhou Luna Nights that adds mobile controls. The PC, Xbox, and Nintendo Switch versions of the game have added up to sales success.

The developer and publishers recently announced that Touhou Luna Nights has surpassed 250,000 units sold over its lifetime, which is not bad at all for a small but beloved indie title. While perhaps not mentioned among the best Metroidvanias ever made, Touhou Luna Nights' key focus on exploration and action help make it stand out. The time stop and "graze" systems are particularly unique, while the art style of Touhou Luna Nights is also colorful and expressive in its 2D pixelated approach.

This is not Team Ladybug's first Metroidvania, as it has developed multiple games including Shin Megami Tensei: Synchronicity Prologue. While there are games like Animal Crossing: New Horizons that sell over 30 million units in a year, those types of numbers cannot be expected from an indie. Meanwhile, fellow Metroid-like indie game Dead Cells recently hit five million units sold, but those numbers are somewhat out of the norm. The team behind Touhou Luna Nights should certainly be celebrating the continued success of its game.

Touhou Luna Nights is available now for PC, Switch, and Xbox One.
