Borderlands 3 players looking to see all there is to see in the Director’s Cut DLC will have a tough task ahead of them. While the Murder Mystery quest line offers the standard level of difficulty, Hemovorous the Invincible is billed as the toughest enemy in the entire game. Considering that she is the first raid boss in Borderlands 3, this is understandable, and she certainly lives up to all the hype.
Borderlands 3 players looking to take on Hemovorous The Invincible will need to head to a specific location and have a clear strategy in mind, as she is a demanding fight that can take a lot of effort if players do not have top-tier builds for their Vault Hunters. Still, there are some strategies that make Hemovorous a bit more manageable, and players that know her attacks going into the encounter have a much better chance at survival. With some great loot up for grabs, taking on the massive Varkid is more than worth the effort.

To first fight Hemovorous The Invincible, players will need to head to Sanctuary 3 and accept the quest “You. Will. Die. Over and Over.” The mission will then have them heading to Pandora, and more specifically, Ascension Bluff. At the top right of the area, gamers will be able to find a special door, and it should look familiar to a lot of players. The same door that puzzled players for months, and that Borderlands 3 fans glitched behind, is now opened. It provides access to Hemovorous’ arena, which is called Darkthirst Dominion.
Once entering the area, Borderlands 3 players will be met with some of the standard vending machines to refill on ammo and supplies. If they walk forward, they will see a large purple door. To open it, 500 Eridium will need to be spent, which should be a hefty sum for most players. Fortunately, players can get Eridium from leveling up the Vault Card, with the old farming spots working just as well. Players that are in groups can also split the entry fee, with each Vault Hunter offering a portion of the 500 Eridium entry fee.
A few other things to note is that players will get 500 Eridium when they first accept the quest, guaranteeing that the first battle with Hemovorous is free. Further, completing Ava’s Mysteriouslier quests may be wise, as players get a special Mysterious artifact that boosts Eridium drop rates and randomly forms new Eridium piles. With the entry fee sticking every time players want to fight the boss, players may need to grind for some pieces of the purple element. Regardless, once all 500 pieces are open, players will enter a new area. After a brief walk through what looks like an Eridian ruin, they will slide down a tunnel into Hemovorous’ arena.
While Borderlands 3 fans expected a lot from Hemovorous, nobody expected two raid boss fights in one. However, that is exactly what players get. The fight begins much like the Vermivorous The Invincible battle from Borderlands 2. Players need to fight against Hemovorous’ larva, killing the small bugs to make them transform into a larger threat. Eventually, the Varkid get stronger and stronger, and with these smaller enemies taking a fair bit of damage, it is clear that players are in for a real tough clash with Hemovorous. Once the final pod is made, the boss will come out — and she will not be alone.
None other than Vermivorous The Invincible is back, giving players a second boss to deal with while they work on the massive Hemovorous. As such, the fight is hectic and intense from beginning to end. From both bosses, players need to watch out for the usual Varkid attacks. They can burrow and launch from the ground near the player, swipe and slam, shoot balls of goo, and fly around. Hemovorous also has some special attacks to look out for, with one seeing her spawn an insane amount of eggs on the player, giving them even more to fight. Electric pools on the floor and an electric beam that divides the arena will also be seen in the battle.
With a lot going on, players looking to take down the boss (and her ally) should keep the following things in mind.
- Prioritize Vermivorous: The weaker of the two, players should aim to kill the original Varkid raid boss first. The last thing players want is two raid bosses to deal with in one the battle, so killing the weaker of the two is a wise decision.
- A Three-Phase Fight: Hemovorous has a ridiculous amount of health, and Borderlands 3 fans can expect a long battle because of that. The first two phases are shield phases, with the boss’s protection coming in the form of armor. As such, players should switch to a corrosive weapon until the shield is gone. For the final phase, incendiary weapons should be used to burn the boss.
- Countering The Electricity: Players have two ways of protecting themselves in the fight. First, they can make a build designed around constant healing or shield recharges. On the other hand, they can equip the Transformer shield that negates all electric damage. This nullifies any electric attacks from the boss, which is a huge plus.
- Using the Larva Against Hemovorous: Once players have shredded the boss’s armor, she will lash out by spawning hordes of smaller enemies. While these can be troublesome due to their numbers, players should leave some alive so they can revive themselves when stuck in “Fight For Your Life.”
- Keep Moving Constantly: More than any other fight, being on the move against this boss is a must. With constant attacks coming in from the main Varkid or her brood, gamers need to be dodging at all times or have an extremely tanky setup.

Once Hemovorous The Invincible is finally dead, players can rack up some incredible Legendary items. While the boss has access to most of Borderlands 3's Legendary items via a large loot pool, there are also four exclusive items that players can obtain. The items are as follows.
- Atlas Replay (Pistol): An interesting Atlas pistol that fires off tracking darts in a horizontal line with its alternate fire. The darts penetrate walls, and each enemy tracked boosts the fire rate. The rockets track to the darts as well, and the gun deals more damage than most Atlas pistols.
- Ringer (Grenade Mod): A large ball that blows up when an enemy is direct impacted. If it does not hit an enemy directly, players can shoot the grenade to detonate it.
- Ionic Disruptor (Sniper Rifle): A powerful Jakobs rifle that completely bypasses shields, this weapon is terrific on tankier enemies. Melee attacks also deal shock damage and provide a debuff that allows the rifle to deal double damage to the stabbed enemy. It also has a unique death animation attached where the enemy releases purple sparkles.
- Company Man (Artifact): Arguably the best item that drops from Hemovorous The Invincible, this Artifact allows for incredible build diversity. Borderlands 3 fans can get a Company Man based on every gun brand, and it will heavily boost damage, critical damage, and accuracy for all guns from the company. For fans of Dahl guns, getting a Dahl Company Man is a must, and the same could be said for any other manufacturer.
With Hemovorous The Invincible satisfying fans, more traditional Borderlands 3 raid bosses would be great to see. With this being the exact type of endgame content that fans have been asking for, hopefully this special Varkid enemy is the first of many new encounters that improve the game further.
Borderlands 3 is available now on PC, PS4, PS5, Stadia, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X.
