Although it wouldn't happen, one Dragon Age 2 dev discusses his version of a 'Snyder Cut' for the middle-child of the franchise.

Ever since Zack Snyder's Justice League released, fans have been discussing "Snyder Cuts" of other movies and even games. The general idea, an extended version packed with cut or otherwise new content, is not a wild one, and there's plenty of video games worthy of a Snyder Cut. Recently, former BioWare Dev David Gaider discussed a hypothetical Snyder cut of Dragon Age 2.

To be clear, this isn't happening as Gaider calls it the "hypothetical of hypotheticals." However, the development complexities are well-known, and cut ideas from Dragon Age 2 always prove to be really interesting to learn about. That's exactly what Gaider discusses in his "Snyder Cut" of the game, with many of these ideas simply sounding like the best version of the game possible. It should be noted that Gaider has since left BioWare, so while Dragon Age 4 is mentioned several times here, Gaider is not involved.

First off, there would be some changes to Dragon Age 2's setting Kirkwall. Years pass in the actual game, but at the end of the day, Kirkwall looks very much the same. It turns out that Kirkwall was supposed to progress and change more, making Kirkwall more of a living city than a stagnant background. It's not even about the repeated levels, suggests Gaider, but just the general idea behind Kirkwall. If not that, then he would reduce the time between acts from years to months in order to make it all make more sense.

Indeed, one of the biggest benefits of the franchise is the beloved land of Thedas. All of it captures the idea of fantasy quite well, with the Free Marches being unique. Come Dragon Age 4, one big wish of many fans is to see what Tevinter and its capital city Minrathous look like. Perhaps Kirkwall was compromised by the game's development, but hopefully, Minrathous shines as the unique Mage City that it is.

In the Dragon Age franchise, Mages' connections to the fade make them susceptible to demons. There's a lot to unpack with how mages are dealt with, yet as Gaider points out, this is something a Mage Hawke never dealt with. Of course, not all mages give it to Blood Magic or deals with demons, but that connection is still there. One cut storyline would have seen a Mage Hawke deal with this exactly, trapped in their own head on the edge of possession. Gaider discusses this storyline as a "hard cut" and it's easy to see why.

The Hawke family itself would have gotten some extra love as well. As the game stands, players basically choose whether or not Bethany or Carver die based on their choice of gender and class. Obviously, new Dragon Age 2 players may not realize that, but it's effectively what happens. Players don't really have enough time to spend with them, though, before this happens; this makes this death less impactful than other deaths that could happen letter. Originally, there was an extended opening that would allow players to spend more time with Bethany and Carver, and it seems that could have made losing one of them that much more impactful.

Changes would have also been made to make Act 3 seem less sudden. While the Mage-Templar War was foreshadowed throughout the game, it does effectively explode and happen in the blink of an eye—a certain decision made by a certain mage that remains a source of debate too. It also seems the ending would have been based more on choice in Dragon Age 2 as well; no matter what the player chooses, they end up fighting both the Mages and Templars in some capacity. In Gaider's Snyder Cut, Orsino wouldn't have necessarily turned on players, nor would Meredith "have red lyrium and go full Tetsuo."

Though it was never planned, Gaider even mentions that something like not siding with either would be an interesting addition, and it certainly would. Kirkwall was one of the worst situations for Mages throughout Thedas, forcing this war, but both sides committed a lot of wrong here. Dragon Age: Inquisition picks up with the idea of bringing this war to an end, at least before Corypheus gets involved.

Added is the idea of more NPC interactions, as Gaider mentions several cut lines. This apparently included people forgetting they'd met Hawke, reactions to knowing they were a mage, or throwback to romances in Dragon Age: Origins. There's no telling how much didn't make the final product, but a "Snyder Cut" would likely bring a lot of these into play, as well it should (if it ever existed).

For many, Varric IS Dragon Age 2. He helped define the game in so many ways, but Gaider mentions some possible changes with him in a hypothetical Snyder's Cut. There would have been segments where Varric exaggerates everything at the beginning of an act, much like the initial opening of the game. Gaider also mentions a Varric romance, which many fans have longed for, but could never happen in-universe due to Varric's love for Bianca. Hopefully, at the very least, Dragon Age 4 should allow players to romance a dwarf, if not Varric.

Finally, perhaps most importantly, Gaider mentions that the Exalted March DLC would be finished. In other words, his Snyder Cut would drastically change how the story ends and thus practically make Dragon Age: Inquisition, in the way that it happens at least, impossible. For context, the Exalted March DLC has been discussed at length before, and reportedly, would include a very upset Chantry, a Qunari invasion (of sorts), Hawke working with Starkhaven, and more pirates. Ultimately, in this DLC, Varric would die. Exact details as to how were not revealed, and as this is not the first time Gaider has mentioned as much either, it's an undeniable, if hypothetical, fact. Many may continue to deny the possibility; Varric's popularity in Dragon Age, overall, cannot be overstated.

His appearance in Dragon Age: Inquisition helped solidify that, but had Exalted March gone as intended, that doesn't seem possible. Gaider doesn't and probably won't open up on the hows and whys of it, but one can only imagine that it was for the greater good of his friends/family. Varric has always been a glue in Dragon Age, and such a scene would have been severely emotional. Nonetheless, when Dragon Age 4 releases, Varric will return as well.

As aforementioned, Gaider is not working on Dragon Age 4. Fans of his, however, should note that he has since co-founded and started his role of Creative Director at Summerfall Studios. Its first game, Chorus: An Adventure Musical, is currently in the works.

Dragon Age 4 is in development.
