Barioth is a flying wyvern in Monster Hunter Rise that can nimbly cross the battlefield and summon icy tornados to attack hunters.

Barioth is yet another monster returning to Monster Hunter Rise from the most recent entry in the series, Monster Hunter World: Iceborne. Fans of the series shouldn't find many surprises when fighting Barioth again in Monster Hunter Rise, but for newcomers or those who'd like a refresher, here are some things to be aware of.

While Barioth does not have a wide range of elemental attacks, it does have some ice related moves in its repertoire. Therefore, players may want to invest in some armor or eat some dango that helps them resist ice. Barioth is mostly a physical attacker though, so standard defense is going to be a more pressing concern.

Players who rely on their silkbind attacks however, may want to make sure they're prepared for the few attacks that Barioth uses that cause iceblight. Unlike past games, iceblight no longer increases stamina consumption rate. Instead, it slows down the cooldowns of players' wirebugs. If players are afflicted, they can eat a nullberry or roll continuously to shake it off.

Regarding Barioth's hitzones, every weapon type will get effective damage from attacking Barioth's head. Blunt weapons will get slightly above average damage from attacking its forelegs and wings. Cutting weapons meanwhile will get damage almost as high as on the head, by attacking the tip of its tail. Shot type weapons are most effective on the actual tail in addition to the head.   Unlike the hard hitting wyvern Diablos, Barioth will take good to decent damage from all weapons when attacking the tip of its tail.

Barioth can be affected by every status ailment, but the only status ailments rated above a one star effectiveness are blast and fireblight which both are rated at two stars. Hunters that use slow hitting weapons that don't benefit much from elemental damage may find more use with a blast element weapon. As for fireblight, it may be worth trying to inflict if players are able to mount an Aknosom via Wyvern Riding to attack Barioth with.

As previously mentioned, Barioth relies mostly on physical attacks, but does have some attacks that can inflict iceblight. One such attack sees Barioth breathe an ice tornado out in front of it. This attack will deal ice damage as well as send players into the air. They can wirefall out of the air for recovery. Barioth can also use this attack on the ground and in the air. Secondly, sometimes Barioth will swipe its tail at hunters. This can also cause iceblight presumably because Barioth stirs up ice with its tail as well.

Aside from those attacks, Barioth will mainly be jumping around the battlefield. Some jumps are more powerful than others, but even ones where it appears Barioth is just moving around the arena can inflict damage to hunters if they're in the area Barioth is jumping to. Other than the tail attack, Barioth will also hip check hunters. This attack is fairly well telegraphed as Barioth will turn its side to the hunter it intends to attack.

When the hunters have the callout to watch out for Barioth's powerful attack, Barioth will jump high into the air and attempt to land on a hunter. It does this with a fairly high degree of accuracy, so players will want to make sure they are ready to dodge. Failure to do so will launch them into the air where they can also wirefall to recover. The best way to get openings on Barioth is to break its wings/forelegs. When they are broken it will sometimes fall down after jumping which will give players an opening to attack it. Even though these aren't the best hitzones, it can be worth targeting them to give hunters more openings.

Monster Hunter Rise is now available for the Nintendo Switch. A PC release is slated for 2022.
