Microsoft adds a sought-after feature for the Edge browser on Xbox, opening the door to a huge amount of possibilities for fans on console.

Wherever users fall on the spectrum of console versus PC gaming, it's clear that PC has a consistent lead when it comes to browsing the web. That may no longer be the case, as Microsoft Edge on the Xbox is adding keyboard and mouse support.

The functionality is live for Xbox Insiders on the Skip-Ahead Alpha release. While these releases are a bit less stable than others, this points to this feature making it into an actual release in the future. The Verge senior editor Tom Warren demonstrated the functionality of the mouse and keyboard on Twitter.

Users should note this is directed toward the Microsoft Edge web browser, not the system as a whole. While the console will have limitations, this opens up possibilities for players that prefer mouse and keyboard. In a later tweet, Warren shows how Google Stadia can be accessed through the browser, and controlled with the mouse and keyboard.

The latest iteration of Microsoft Edge was developed with Chromium, and essentially has all the functionality of the Google Chrome browser. This makes for a powerful engine that can drive web-based content and allow for creativity for product releases. The shortage of GPUs could require PC gamers to take a closer look at the Xbox Series X as a possible replacement now that this function is being added.

It's unclear when the feature will fully release, and whether services like Google Stadia will be limited. With the Xbox Series X sales lagging behind its competitor, the PS5, by nearly 2 million units, reaching out to different markets with a Microsoft Edge update like this is something that could make consumers think more about which console to buy.
