After skipping March, Sony is debuting a new State of Play presentation later this week that's focused on Ratchet and Clank and some indie titles.

Anticipation about PlayStation State of Play presentations always runs high, as fans look forward to the showcases for more details about already announced and yet unrevealed content coming to the platform. After skipping March, Sony recently announced a new PlayStation State of Play to air this week on April 29th, but unlike the last update in February, Sony has already set some expectations about what to expect from the State of Play this Thursday.

After a February State of Play that some didn't consider truly next-gen, Sony seemingly has looked to set the expectations of what to see ahead of time. The last event only covered one major AAA release with the announcement of Final Fantasy 7 Remake Intergrade after focusing on indie releases like Knockout City, Deathloop, and the interesting new action-brawler game, Sifu. While many fans loved to see so many indie games, many others were hoping for updates about God of War Ragnarok or Horizon Forbidden West. Setting expectations ahead of time will likely prove a good move for Sony ahead of the next State of Play.

Sony has, ahead of time, announced that the upcoming State of Play will open with an extensive gameplay demonstration for Ratchet and Clank: Rift Apart. While, again, many fans were hoping to get more information about the other big-name Sony properties, Ratchet & Clank has a large fanbase that will likely be excited to see more of the now officially-named Rivet in action. PlayStation's official Twitter account also stated that a pair of indie games will be highlighted during the show as well.

What those two indie games end up being will be the area of contention among speculators leading up to the event this Thursday. The Pixar and Pikmin reminiscent Kena: Bridge of Spirits is a likely contender, given how little is known of it. Promoting the game now seems like a safe bet for Sony to start ramping up excitement for the title. Sifu and Knockout City are equally as likely, but given their more recent reveals, there's likely less new information to be shared. It could be something new, but the key phrase here is indie. Fans should expect the show to be about 90% Ratchet and Clank, 10% everything else.

State of Play events are definitely known for surprises though. Many fans had expected an FF7 Remake upgrade for PS5, but few had anticipated the extent of the upgrade and the impact that Yuffie's introduction in Intergrade will have on the game. So albeit wishful thinking, it's not out of the realm of possibility that Sony will surprise fans near the end of the event with a surprise reveal or unannounced update. The obvious candidates would be God of War Ragnarok or Horizon Forbidden West, but Sony has other titles coming exclusively to the PlayStation 5 that would garner a lot of excitement like Final Fantasy 16. While a surprise may be in store, fans should keep their expectations in check. Sony has outlined the big focus, and asking for more is just set-up for disappointment.

Sony's next State of Play presentation airs Thursday April 29th at 2pm Pacific Time.
