Mortal Kombat 1 is an ambitious reboot of the series, but it still pays homage to some of the franchise's new and old traditions. The game has added an assist mechanic in the form of Kameo Fighters, and its timeline has been rebooted once again, allowing for characters and their role in MK's lore to be re-imagined. While a lot has been reworked, the new renditions of characters honor their origins, a trait which has extended to those included in the game's first Kombat Pack. Mortal Kombat 1's Quan Chi has fatalities that take full advantage of his abilities and legacy as MK's most notorious necromancer.
