When Mortal Kombat 1 was revealed as the new era for the Mortal Kombat franchise, it wasn't entirely clear what that meant. After Mortal Kombat (2011) served as a reboot of the original MK trilogy and MKX a retelling of Mortal Kombat 4, it seemed that Mortal Kombat 11 was going to be the chance to return to the 3D-era plot.
