The most challenging puzzle that players will face when progressing through The Medium's story is the water pump that is encountered after players unlock the bunker door in the red house basement. While the puzzle may initially appear daunting with several levers and buttons for the player to press, like most puzzles in The Medium, the solution is not as difficult as it may appear.
In the water pump facility, there are four main rooms that players will progress through to unlock the puzzle. The rooms include the west chamber, central chamber, east chamber, and control room.

When inspecting the map in the control room, players will see that the exit to the water pump facility is located in the central chamber which can be accessed via the east chamber. In the control room, players will find a panel that lists the water level of each room in addition to buttons that pump water from one room to another.
Because the rooms that Marianne needs to progress through are flooded, the main priority for this puzzle is to pump out all the water from the east chamber and central chamber. To do this, the player must utilize the water tanks in both the east and west chamber and must be manually opened.
The player's first step should be to direct the west chamber water pressure to the central chamber. The player must then walk to the west chamber which has now been drained and manually open the first water tank.
To open the water tank, players must insert the red valve into the blue pipe in the material world. At this point, the Maw will appear for an instant, but he will quickly disappear shortly after. It is also important to note that in these areas, the spirit world Marianne will be attacked by moths. While this would normally require Marianne to use her shield ability, in this instance the player can simply run through them.
After the tank has been opened, the player must return to the control room and move the water from the central chamber into "water tank 1" which is now accessible. The next step to complete this puzzle requires the player to open the second water tank which is accessed through the east chamber. Just like in the west chamber, in this room, the player must find the red valve - located in a locker - and place it on the red pipe in order to unlock the tank.
To accomplish this, players must simply repeat the process by moving the water from the east chamber to the central chamber. After the water has been moved, the player can now access the east chamber and manually open the second water tank. With the second water tank open, head back to the control room and redirect the water from the central chamber to the second tank. After the tank is filled, the final step is for the player to clear a path from the east chamber to the exit in the central chamber.
Move the remaining water from the east chamber to the central chamber, and then finally move the water from the central chamber to the west chamber. The player can now head down to the east chamber and access the door which will exit the area and complete the puzzle.
