In the midst of the Apple v. Epic Games legal battle, comments made by Apple's lawyer about Itch.io become the subject of ridicule.

One court case has quickly become the most talked-about trial for gamers. In the hotly discussed case that pits Apple and Epic Games against each other, a comment by one of the lawyers representing Apple about Itch.io, a website for indie games, has become the subject of ridicule on Twitter.

The Apple v. Epic Games case began primarily as a disagreement between the two parties over commission fees imposed by Apple on the Apple Games store. After Epic Games attempted to work around their commission fees, Apple responded in kind by removing Fortnite from the Apple Games store, and in the ensuing chaos, Epic Games leveled a claim against Apple stating that the company had a monopoly over its own market. During the case, Apple took a shot at the Epic Games Store, which includes games from Itch.io—somewhat notorious for its hosting of adult-themed content.

The hilarity that ensued was not because of the fact that Itch.io was dragged into the whole mess, but the specific word choice used by Apple lawyers. Out of its countless indie offerings, Itch.io also hosts a slew of games with sexual content and otherwise mature themes. Itch.io styles this section "Sensitive Content," but it was called, by what is being mocked as an overly prudish comment, by Apple lawyers: "Unspeakable Games."

Of course, Itch.io decided to have a bit of fun with the comment, suggesting that it is going to officially rename the section to fall in line with the lawyer's description. While games with overtly sexual content and mature themes may strike the uninitiated as unusual, they have become more or less mainstream within gaming communities. Just two months ago, an adults-only game called Subverse ranked highly among Steam's best sellers. So when viewers felt that Apple's lawyers were employing a bit of unnecessary hyperbole when speaking about Itch.io's content, it quickly became fuel for relentless parody.

One Twitter user, lowpolis, set the quote in the context of the Ace Attorney franchise. Another photoshopped the Itch.io filters to have one of the choices read "show content marked as unspeakable in search & browse."

While the comments did provide quite a bit of tongue-in-cheek fun, the case remains ongoing and the topic of commission rates is one that is still hotly debated between developers and storefronts. As such, the outcome of the Apple v. Epic Games case is one that could have broad-sweeping implications across the entire gaming marketplace.
