Resident Evil is enjoying an era of success that began around the time of the middle of the previous console generation's cycle and into the present landscape. After weathering a rockier period from around 2009-2012, specifically when RE5 and RE6 were released and received a less-than-warm welcome due to many fans' displeasure with their deviations from the series' survival horror core into more bombastic action territory, developer Capcom turned things around for Resident Evil with the reboot of the franchise in 2017's Resident Evil 7. This was followed two years later by the remake of RE2, widely considered one of the best remakes in the industry to date, and setting the stage for RE's triumphant return.
