Obsidian Entertainment's The Outer Worlds was a return to form in a few ways for the studio in 2019, after a string of successful but comparatively less popular titles like Tyranny and the Pillars of Eternity titles. The studio's FPS RPG thrust players into an entertaining space-faring romp in a parodic and warped future society, and was well-received by audiences and critics, moving over 4 million units by the summer of 2021. Shortly after, Obsidian confirmed it would be developing a sequel, The Outer Worlds 2.
