While the PlayStation 5 remains difficult to obtain for many thanks to console shortages and COVID-19 restrictions slowing down manufacturing of next-gen consoles, anyone lucky enough to get their hands on the system will soon have another acclaimed game to play. Square Enix's PS5 version of Final Fantasy 14 is leaving its open beta and officially launching soon.
This installment of the beloved sci-fi fantasy series was initially released in 2010 for PC after early criticisms resulted in the PS3 version being cancelled. After its disappointing launch, Square Enix rebuilt the game from the ground up. The remade version was launched in 2013 and secured Final Fantasy 14's place as an equal among the rest of the Final Fantasy lineup.

The massively multiplayer online role-playing game (MMORPG) eventually got its PS3 release, as well as a PS4 release, and on May 25 the title will officially come to the PS5. The next-generation edition of Final Fantasy 14 will support 4K video output, an updated high resolution user interface, faster loading times, 3D audio, and haptic feedback for the DualSense controller. Fans of the game can also expect brand-new trophies when the upgraded world of Eorzea goes live.
Those who already own the MMORPG on PS4 will be able to upgrade to the new PlayStation 5 version for free, so anyone who already purchased the game but wants to visit the breathtaking locations of Final Fantasy 14 in 4K will be able to do so at no extra charge. The more powerful hardware of the PS5 promises to improve performance as well, so anyone who has played the game on different hardware will also get to see how much smoother it might play.
Besides being the release date for the PS5 version of Final Fantasy 14, May 25 will also see the release of patch 5.55 for the game. The patch will update several elements of Final Fantasy 14's Endwalker expansion including Save the Queen and YoRHa: Dark Apocalypse epilogue quests. Part two of the Death Unto Dawn scenario will also be released with the patch, alongside a new reward for completing a Triple Triad card collection.
The release of the PS5 upgrade, as well as the details for the Endwalker expansion patch, were announced at the Final Fantasy 14 Fan Festival that ran virtually on May 14 and 15. The event also featured a live Q&A, several showcases, and live musical performances.
Final Fantasy 14 is available now on PC, PS3, and PS4. The PS5 version officially launches on May 25.
