Having to restock planetary probes in Mass Effect 2 is essential to collecting the proper resources needed to survive the final mission.

So much time is spent in Mass Effect: Legendary Edition exploring the distant corners of the Milky Way Galaxy. There are different reasons to explore across all three games, but preparing for the suicide mission at the end of Mass Effect 2 might just take the cake in terms of importance. Upgrades for Shepard and their crew are crafted using the many resources scattered across the galaxy, but getting the resources requires a hefty amount of planetary probes.

When the Normandy approaches certain eligible planets, the player is given the option to scan them in search of Element Zero, Iridium, Palladium, and Platinum. If they choose to launch a probe, they'll get an assortment of resources but lose the probe in the process. The Normandy can only carry 30 probes at the start of Mass Effect 2 in Mass Effect: Legendary Edition, but luckily, they can be restocked and the ship can be upgraded to carry more.

Actually acquiring replacement probes is simple and relatively cheap. The player can purchase them from Fuel Depots which are found in any system with a Mass Relay. They can be bought in groups of five for 100 credits per bundle. It's not a bad idea to pick some up every time Shepard is in the vicinity, but if they completely run out, restocking 30 probes will only cost 600 credits.

Upgrading the Normandy SR-2 to be able to carry more probes is also an option for those looking to stop at Fuel Depots less and by extension increase the survivability of the game's final mission. To increase the carrying capacity from 30 to 60, the player needs to complete Dossier: The Assassin on Illium. The mission can be started immediately after the Collector attack on Horizon once the Illusive Man gives the information to Shepard.

At the end of the mission, Shepard will have recruited the Drell assassin Thane to their crew. Once Thane is aboard the Normandy, go and talk to him in his space in Life Support and he'll offer to upgrade the ship with his old assassin friends.

After accepting the offer, an upgrade for a Modular Probe Bay can be found in the upgrade menu in the Tech Labs. To research and apply it, Shepard needs 15,000 Iridium which is found using probes on unexplored planets. After the upgrade is complete, the Normandy will now carry 60 probes. While it would be more convenient, unfortunately, there is no option to expand that number even further.

Mass Effect: Legendary Edition is available now on PC, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One.
