Egg groups play an important role in the Pokemon franchise, particularly when it comes to breeding. Generally speaking, unless they're using a Ditto, players will only be able to breed Pokemon who belong to the same egg group, although it's important to note that Pokemon who are part of the Undiscovered group cannot be bred at all.
