Re-Logic's Terraria contains thousands of items, some of which are extremely difficult to obtain. What the rarest items in the sandbox game?

One of the best things about Terraria is how much stuff there is and the amazing things players can do with them. But some are almost impossible to get hold of.

Terraria has over 4,000 items as of the 2020 update and is renowned for being so expansive that players always find something new to do on whatever console they play on. These items can do wonderful things, be rather destructive, or just look pretty in a house. Nevertheless, as it is in most games, they don't always come easy.

Some items in Terraria are difficult to get, often requiring players to kill huge bosses, but others are so rare that they have less than a 0.1% chance of being obtained. While this is frustrating, most of them are undeniably worth the hassle and provide a nice break from hunting for Easter Eggs.

Updated May 26th, 2021 by Jessica Filby: This year marks Terraria's 10th anniversary, inspiring many players to reminisce on the hit game and try out the new seed gifted to them by the developers. This seed introduced a variety of new and veteran players as they search to make the best base, kill the coolest monsters, and find the rarest items they can. With that in mind, it seems like the perfect time to take another look at the rarest items in the game and how challenging it is to get hold of them!

15 Reindeer Bells

  • Drop Rate: 0.56% – 0.83%

Reindeer Bells was the first item added to Terraria that summons a mount. However, this mount is anything but average. The item summons Rudolph himself, including his shiny red nose, and he offers speeds that make you faster than a player with Lightning Boots.

This item can be obtained by defeating the most challenging boss of the Frost Moon event, the Ice Queen from wave 15 onwards. The player can fly on Rudolph and run extremely quickly, making this tough battle worth the effort.

14 Tattered Bee Wing

  • Drop Rate: 0.67%

The wonderful Tattered Bee Wing is only really used to craft Bee Wings, but who doesn't want the ability to fly like a bee and float down caves and steep drops?

It's worth noting that this item can only be found in Hard Mode so there's a pretty big risk to get hold of this item, luckily the reward is great. While in Hard Mode, head to the Underground Jungle and fight the Moss Hornets, with any luck the player will get hold of the rare Tattered Bee Wing.

13 Beam Sword

  • Drop Rate: 0.67%

The rarest items seem to be solely obtainable in Hard Mode, which makes sense since they tend to be pretty powerful. This Beam Sword is no exception, however, with a 0.67% chance to drop, any player is lucky to weald this awesome item.

The sword itself is dropped by Armored Skeletons and Heavy Skeletons so if the player wants to get this weapon they may have to grind a little. Nevertheless, the beam sword does around 52 damage and has a 6.2 knockback whilst also having the ability to shoot an awesome yellow beam of light while also hitting the enemy. Not only does this weapon look awesome but it also does some amazing damage making it a pretty sought-after sword.

12 Money Trough

  • Drop Rate: 0.5% – 6.67%

With a tiny 0.5% chance to drop from Blood Zombies and Dripplers, the Money Trough summons a cute tiny piggy bank that can be used to store money to keep it safe from death or just to keep it out of the hands of other players. In the Desktop version's 1.4.0.1 update, Wandering Eye Fish and Zombie Mermen also started to drop Money Trough at a higher rate of 6.67%.

While it doesn't follow the player, the piggy bank can be re-summoned whenever. It serves as a perfect assistant if the player is looking to stray away from their home base for a while and wants to protect their hard-earned funds.

11 Magical Pumpkin Seed

  • Drop Rate: 0.5%

The Magical Pumpkin Seed is a pet summoner that has only a 0.5% chance to drop. Not only that but it can only be found during the Halloween season. This makes it not only rare but extremely challenging to get hold of, although luckily all the player needs to do is harvest pumpkins during this time of year.

The Magical Pumpkin Seed summons an adorable Squashling which allows the player to get their hands on a rare pet that just looks like Jack 'o' Lantern with vines as legs. It's creepy but cute and the perfect Halloween companion!

10 Wisp In A Bottle

  • Drop Rate: 0.25%

Similar to the Magical Pumpkin Seed, the Wisp in a Bottle is a cute little wisp pet summoner. It's similar to a Fairy Bell or the spell Shadow Orb but unlike those, the wisp will follow the player's movements. While this item has a tiny drop rate, it's handy since it also serves as a light.

Due to it being a light source and its ability to follow the player around, this item becomes impeccable when traveling through or looking for caves and ores since it can also pass through walls. Wisp in a Bottle can be obtained by defeating either Blue Armored Bones or Hell Armored Bones in Hard Mode, although a drop isn't guaranteed.

9 Lizard Egg

  • Drop Rate: 0.1%

This item is (very rarely) dropped by Flying Snakes and Lihzahrds inside the Jungle Temple. This makes it one of the rarest pet summoners in the game. However, it does summon this tiny lizard that will follow the player around and fly to them if it gets left behind.

It should be noted that this is, in fact, a social pet and will not fight with or for you. While that is a shame, this pet is well worth getting purely for the cute factor.

8 Blessed Apple

  • Drop Rate: 0.5%

Pet summoners and mount summoners are the best things, they can be adorable and useful at the same time, although their use and popularity are a little hindered by their rarity. When the player is playing Terraria on a console, the Blessed Apple has a drop rate of 0.5% in the normal game mode and 0.607% in Hard Mode.

This rarity doesn't make the item less desired as it can be used to summon an adorable Unicorn Mount that does damage to enemies on contact and runs incredibly fast. All the player has to do is grind some hallowed mobs and hope it drops.

7 Pirate Staff

  • Drop Rate: 0.05% – 1%

It seems to be a theme that summoning items are among the rarest in the game but they can come in handy, especially the Pirate Staff. This item can be found after the pirate invasion.

What makes this item so incredible is the fact that it spawns mini pirates who fight for you with tiny swords. They defecate on the ground from time to time and will be carried by parrots to catch up to the player if they get too far away.

6 Bladed Glove

  • Drop Rate: 0.05%

Many players may think this is a pretty weak item to get hold of. After all, it only does 12 damage. However, the Bladed Glove is actually the second fasted melee weapon in the game, second only to the Fetid Baghnakhs.

With a drop rate of 0.05%, the Bladed Gloves are incredibly hard to get hold of. However, this rare drop can be obtained during Halloween and only from powerful monsters.

5 Biome Keys

  • Drop Rate: 0.04%

With five different Biome Keys to get hold of, many players would think they're pretty easy. They couldn't be more wrong. Each key has a 0.04% chance to drop and is obviously found in each biome in the world but only in Hardmode.

The challenge is pretty great but the items these keys unlock are even better and undeniably make it worth it. Each key unlocks a weapon:

  • Jungle Key = Piranha Gun
  • Corruption Key = Scourge of the Corruptor
  • Crimson Key = Vampire Knives
  • Hallowed Kay = Rainbow Gun
  • Frozen Key = Staff of the Frost Hydra

4 Lucky Coin

  • Drop Rate: 0.025% – 0.5%

This item is an incredibly rare accessory that can only be obtained in Hard Mode while fighting the pirates during the Pirate Invasion. If the player fights these pirates on the Flying Dutchman, this item's drop rate increases to 0.5%; however, anywhere else, it's an almost impossible 0.025%.

The Lucky Coin is an item that allows there to be a 20% chance that 1 to 10 extra coins will drop each time the player hits an enemy. The probabilities of coin type mean that it's an 89.1% chance to get copper, 9.9% for silver, and a tiny 1% chance for gold. Nevertheless, the Lucky Coin is incredibly useful.

3 Amber Mosquito

  • Drop Rate: 0.01% – 0.027%

Found by feeding Desert Fossils, Slush, or Silt into an Extractinator, this summoner is not a likely or quick drop. With a drop rate of an almost non-existent 0.01% for Slush and Silt and 0.027% for Desert Fossils, many players consider themselves beyond lucky to boast the small green dinosaur they get to summon from this item.

Similar to other pets, when the player runs too far away from the dinosaur, it gets carried by a Pterodactyl and appears by your side. Many of the rarest items in the games are summoners but this one certainly takes the cake for the most time-consuming item to get hold of, unless the player is incredibly lucky and gets it the first time.

2 Coin Gun

  • Drop Rate: 0.0125% – 0.25%

This item does what it says on the tin, it shoots coins at enemies. It has the second rarest drop rate in the game, at 0.0125% from most pirates. The Pirate Captain has a higher drop rate of 0.05%, while the Flying Dutchman offers a 0.25% chance. However, it's not considered the rarest item since the player can just keep taking part in pirate invasions to try to get their hands on it, but even then it's still difficult.

The Coin Gun does some pretty impressive damage as well as having an insanely fast use time. The damage depends on the coins: a copper coin does 25 damage, a  silver coin does 50 damage, gold is 100 damage, and platinum coins do a huge 200 damage. This makes it an incredibly sought-after weapon and one that the players will struggle to find, but it will be worth it when they do.

1 Slime Staff

  • Drop Rate: 0.01% – 1%

The Slime Staff has the smallest drop chance of any item in the game and is, therefore, the rarest. With a drop chance of 0.01% from most slimes, the player will be killing enemies for days just to get hold of this stuff. The only exception is Pinky, which has a 1% of dropping the Slime Staff. However, that enemy's rarity means the higher percentage doesn't ultimately make much of a difference.

As this staff summons a tiny slime companion who can do 6 attacks per second when at maximum potential, it's certainly worth it. There are many tips to get hold of this staff which include statue farms, lava, and graveyards, but even with all this, that drop chance is just incredibly slim. Nevertheless, that baby slime is just far too useful to pass up.
