Replay value is a massive selling point for games in the modern era. While many players may enjoy a linear narrative experience that's not designed to be replayed immediately, others value replayability above all else. Linear games still have plenty of fans, and many of them manage to offer replay value in spite of their structure (see Resident Evil), but sandbox games are able to thrive thanks to their innate replayability.
