Triternion's Mordhau is a medieval multiplayer game focusing on melee combat. What are the best weapons in the title? Which should be avoided?

There are a number of weapons players can use in Mordhau to strike at their opponents. Everything from massive hammers to simple throwing knives can be used to take another opponent’s life. In fact, any weapon can be a deadly tool in the hands of a skilled player.

That being said, there are some weapons that serve the player far more effectively in battle. Weapons that just about any average player can pick up and wield with relative efficiency. There are also weapons that just simply aren’t as effective in battle. Here are the best and worst weapons of destruction Mordhau has to offer.

Updated May 28th, 2021 by Ben Baker: When a player is looking for the next best weapon to defeat their enemies in Mordhau, it doesn’t really benefit them to know which weapons not to use. It’s also apparent that players may want more than just five options of the best weapons they should be using. Because of these reasons, this article has been updated to give players the 10 best weapons in the game and the reasons you should be using them.

10 Pole Axe

  • Weapon Type: Two-Handed
  • Cost: 18
  • Head Damage: 100/78/53/48
  • Torso Damage: 70/63/38/35
  • Leg Damage: 65/53/36/34

Pole Axe makes the cut of best weapons in the game thanks to its excellent reach and versatility. Against single opponents, the Pole Axe can give the player room to kite their enemy and stay away from any weapon they may be wielding.

When facing groups, the Pole Axe turns the player into a pinwheel of death capable of sweeping and kiting with brutal efficiency. The reason it doesn’t rank higher is that there exists another weapon with equal reach and better performance; however, for those starting out, the Pole Axe is not a bad option.

9 Maul

  • Weapon Type: Two-Handed
  • Cost: 21
  • Head Damage: 100/100/100/100
  • Torso Damage: 85/83/67/66
  • Leg Damage: 75/73/66/65

Players that main with the Maul have something of a love/hate relationship with it. If wielded properly, it can deal brutal damage and can even take down lesser armored targets with a single well-placed blow.

But to do this players need to account for slow swing speed and bad reach. Tanky builds will get the most mileage out of this weapon, but even then, it will take some practice to truly master. Rest assured, once you’re familiar with this weapon’s quirks, you’ll be a terrifying foe on the battlefield.

8 Messer

  • Weapon Type: Two-Handed (Main) & One-Handed (Alt)
  • Cost: 15
  • Head Damage: 100/75/62/48
  • Torso Damage: 70/60/52/40
  • Leg Damage: 60/50/42/34

The Messer is a weapon that certainly makes a mess of things. It has the reach of a Greatsword and delivers damage that exceeds that weapon. The tradeoff for this power is a slower attack speed.

At times, this weapon will feel like a Maul with a blade and slightly better stats. Like the Maul, the Messer will take some practice to get the most out of it. Beginners may want something a little more user-friendly, but experienced players with some patience will find this to be a useful but tricky weapon to wield.

7 Battle Axe

  • Weapon Type: Two-Handed
  • Cost: 15
  • Head Damage: 100/100/68/60
  • Torso Damage: 75/62/53/45
  • Leg Damage: 65/52/43/35

The Battle Axe has a longer reach than most weapons in the swords and axes categories. It’s not as long as a Pole Axe, but players will find it easier to stay out of the enemy’s range while still striking back. The damage could be a little stronger, but it does the job.

This is a nice weapon for players who find themselves frustrated with the limited range of the Maul and want something just a bit faster than the Messer. With a Bloodlust-based build, this weapon will carve through armies.

6 War Axe

  • Weapon Type: Two-Handed
  • Cost: 15
  • Head Damage: 130/105/80/55
  • Torso Damage: 100/75/65/50
  • Leg Damage: 80/65/55/45

The War Axe is very similar to the Battle Axe. The main difference is that it’s a bit shorter than the Battle Axe, but it gains extra damage and a nudge in attack speed. Those differences make it arguably better than the Battle Axe.

In fact, this is arguably the strongest axe in Mordhau in terms of versatility and utility. If players are good at blocking, dodging, or simply taking damage, then the War Axe will serve them better than the Battle Axe.

5 Throwing Knives

  • Weapon Type: Ranged
  • Cost: 4
  • Head Damage: 95/65/35/30
  • Torso Damage: 55/50/20/15
  • Leg Damage: 40/35/5/5

Ranged weapons tend to be overlooked in this game and this isn’t entirely without merit. They cost ammo and don’t deal as much damage. There is one ranged weapon however that rises above the rest and can even be more useful than many of the melee weapons.

Throwing Knives are great for quickly taking out unarmored opponents thanks to their decent damage. Even against heavily armored foes they’re handy thanks to their fast priming and throwing speeds. Throwing Knives also don’t take that many build points to become proficient with. They will never be someone's main weapon, but they are the most useful ranged weapons in the game.

4 Greatsword

  • Weapon Type: Two-Handed
  • Cost: 21
  • Head Damage: 100/80/60/48
  • Torso Damage: 75/65/43/38
  • Leg Damage: 65/55/34/34

The Greatsword is a fantastic weapon for various situations. It has a relatively fast attack for its size, offers different combat styles, and deals great damage. It also doesn’t cost many points allowing for better armor.

If players are unsure which weapon they should be using, the Greatsword makes for a great default choice. In fact, many of the more experienced players cite this powerful sword as their weapon of choice. Learning to use this weapon will benefit the player no matter their skill level.

3 Zweihander

  • Weapon Type: Two-Handed
  • Cost: 24
  • Head Damage: 115/100/70/50
  • Torso Damage: 100/85/55/40
  • Leg Damage: 70/65/40/39

The Zweihander is essentially a very long Greatsword. As such it has a greater reach and more damage potential in battle. A player trained with this weapon and thick armor can be very dangerous on the frontlines of combat.

It does cost a bit more and will prevent the player from wearing as much armor as they would with other weapons. It can also be slow at times. However, players familiar with its speed and comfortable going in with less armor than usual can quickly cut their enemies down with this weapon.

2 Eveningstar

  • Weapon Type: Two-Handed
  • Cost: 21
  • Head Damage: 102/100/77/65
  • Torso Damage: 62/59/57/55
  • Leg Damage: 57/50/45/45

For many players, the Eveningstar is the best weapon in the game. It has incredible stamina management and it takes quite a bit to disarm an opponent wielding this weapon. With a full strike, it can also kill even the most heavily armored units in two hits.

It does have some limitations in team fights and doesn’t have the best range. But for players dueling or bashing it out on the frontlines, this may be the best option available to them.

1 Halberd

  • Weapon Type: Two-Handed
  • Cost: 24
  • Head Damage: 115/100/70/48
  • Torso Damage: 100/75/55/40
  • Leg Damage: 85/65/45/37

An argument could be made that the Halberd is the single best weapon in this multiplayer game. It has excellent reach, high damage, and is very versatile. In fact, many players will intentionally train with this weapon to be able to handle just about any threat.

That range is one of the reasons it’s the best weapon. Whether fighting a single opponent or a group of people, the Halberd is good at keeping foes at a distance while still dealing damage. Many experienced frontline fighters use this weapon and for good reason.
