Actor David Thewlis has appeared in a number of great projects, including Fargo, I'm Thinking Of Ending Things, and the Harry Potter series of films, where he plays beloved professor Remus Lupin. He is also known for his and who is known for his role as Sir Patrick Morgan (Ares) in Wonder Woman. However, one film role he was somewhat confused about was a recent brief cameo.
The actor took to Instagram to express his confusion when it comes to his mysterious appearance in Zack Snyder’s Justice League. He shared an image from the four-hour-long film which features a flashback scene of a battle featuring the Olympians, Green Lanterns, and Amazonians. Thewlis stated in the caption on Instagram, “I would just like to say that I have no recollection of this ever happening - I assume it was before lockdown."

"I do not know these gentlemen and I have no idea why my left arm is so tiny. Anyone with further information please come forward." Thewlis’s actual face is present in the scene, but his body has been replaced by stunt double Nick McKinless. It was quite hard for fans to not notice the massive difference in appearance from Thewlis’s actual performance in Wonder Woman to this cut in Zack Snyder’s Justice League.
Ares' change in his physicality shouldn’t be completely unexpected, it is a flashback after all. Playing with time can allow for some wiggle room when it comes to the transformation process of a character. In fact, one of the main ways creators are able to communicate time jumps to fans is through the alteration of a character’s outer appearance. However, the way this flashback was carried out by the creators is anything but a smooth transition.
Thewlis uses his shining humor to make light of the visual effects that took place in post-production. Fans barely had to question after seeing the mismatch of Thewlis’s face compared to the rest of his body as to whether he was present on set that day. Thewlis even went out of his way to draw attention to how puny his left arm looks in comparison to the size of the axe that Ares is gripping. The decision to later add Thewlis's face in post-production as opposed to him showing up for set is quite strange.
Thewlis himself and fans are questioning as to who exactly made this decision but more importantly why? It must have given some fans a good laugh when seeing this puzzling scene on their screens, but this was obviously not the creator’s intention. Thewlis shifted what could have been a harsh critique into something that many fans now see as hilarious and quite silly.
