There are two positions that can fill this role: Strong Safeties (SS) and Free Safeties (FS). Strong Safeties will be closer to the line of scrimmage and will be ideal for shutting down run plays. However, Free Safeties have more distance from the line of scrimmage and will be able to assist in deep passing plays.
