With its vast, gigantic machine-filled landscapes populated with relatively new tribes and cultures, Horizons world can seem like its a completely original setting, such as the fictional worlds of God of War or Halo. Its not until players delve deeper into Horizons story and look closer at its varied locations that its real-world influences are revealed. Both Horizon Zero Dawn and Horizon Forbidden West in particular are based heavily on the western United States, including Utah, Nevada, and California.
