The Dunmer is a popular race of dark elves from The Elder Scrolls franchise and a new fan art shows the differences between the generations.

The Elder Scrolls is a series that has been going strong for decades and there are several races that inhabit each installment. A fan artist recently combined Dunmer from The Elder Scrolls 3: Morrowind, The Elder Scrolls 4: Oblivion, and The Elder Scrolls 5: Skyrim to illustrate the differences between them.

The Dunmer have changed since the release of Morrowind back in 2002 as illustrated by a fan of The Elder Scrolls franchise on Reddit. This fan art combines models of dark elves from various titles in The Elder Scrolls games with the artist's own interpretation of each generation of Dunmer alongside them.

At the beginning of Morrowind, The Elder Scrolls fans are introduced to a Dunmer known as Jiub who's rough around the edges and looks like an alien more than an elf. This fan art shows Jiub next to Felen Relas from Oblivion and a player-created Skyrim Dunmer. The juxtaposition between the three dark elves is further emphasized by an adjacent doodle of each of their faces. The first and last doodle of the Dunmer look intimidating and strong, while the Oblivion character in the middle is a grinning babyface.

Based on the artists' doodles underneath the various Dunmer models from The Elder Scrolls series shows just how toned down the Oblivion Dunmer are in comparison to either those in Morrowind or Skyrim. While the Dunmer in Morrowind look rugged and barebones, the vilified dark elves of Skyrim are battle-hardened. Each of the headshots emphasizes the glowing red eyes of The Elder Scrolls' Dunmer, but only the left and right doodles show off the appropriately dark tones of the dark elves.

Dunmer in Oblivion may not have been as battle-hardened as those in Skyrim or as rugged as their Morrowind brethren, but there are still fans of the happier design. Several fans of The Elder Scrolls commented on this fan art to spread Dunmer fondness and appreciation for the lore of the grey-skinned elves. Each generation of The Elder Scrolls Dunmer shows improvements in visual fidelity and there are several fans noticing the improvements made along the way in the Reddit comments.

Jiub is a prisoner when The Elder Scrolls fans meet him at the beginning of Morrowind, but throughout the course of the game, he achieves sainthood. Meanwhile, Felen Relas is an accomplished Alchemist that plays a big role at Oblivion's Mages Guild. The dark elves of Skyrim are vilified by the Nords, but some characters such as Irileth and Neloth rise above the systemic hatred to reach success. Bethesda has yet to unveil The Elder Scrolls 6 Dunmer or what they will look like but it may be along the same lines as those in other titles.

The Elder Scrolls 5: Skyrim  is available right now for PC, PS4, Switch, and Xbox One.
