Good streets are necessary for any city, especially in Frostpunk, where planning and efficiency are the difference between survival and extinction.

The primary objective of Frostpunk is simple: keep the City alive. However, as with most survival strategy games, that’s much more easily said than done. Constructing Streets is one of the most basic tasks players need to get acquainted with.

In Frostpunk, Streets not only help Workers and Engineers navigate the city faster, but they also connect buildings to the central Generator. Structures will not function unless connected to the Generator by a Street.

To build Streets, players first need to select them from the construction menu. PC players start by clicking the hammer icon in the bottom left of the screen. Disregard the construction tabs and look at the bottom of the menu. There, players will find an icon showing a cluster of small lines resembling pavement. Selecting it brings up the Street building interface. Console players instead need to hold L2 on PlayStation or LT on Xbox. Then, select the construction icon from the radial menu. Streets will be on the bottom of each construction tab.

Once Streets are selected, click and drag with the mouse or cursor to plot the Street’s path. Every two segments of Street cost one unit of Wood to build. As with all other construction, Workers and Engineers will build Streets when not performing another task. Unassigned citizens are always free to build, while those assigned to jobs build at night and early in the morning.

Frostpunk does not allow players to build diagonal Streets, and Streets must connect to the Generator to function. To cancel construction or remove a Street, select the red icon near Streets in the construction menu. Then, the player can click and drag over the Street they want to be removed. Demolishing Streets refunds the building cost. So, if the player has a long street that they don’t need anymore, it’s a good idea to demolish it for resources. Of course, that applies to every building in Frostpunk.

Players should build their Streets as direct as possible to save resources and make sure citizens actually use them. Workers won’t hesitate to go off-road if the constructed path takes them out of their way. This isn’t much of an issue in the City center but becomes noticeable with outlying structures like Mines and Sawmills. Trudging through deep snow slows Workers down considerably, reducing efficiency. So try building straight roads as much as possible.

It is also a good idea to plan before constructing Streets, or anything else in Frostpunk for that matter. Different buildings have different shaped foundations, which can make Street building a hassle. It’s always helpful for the player to visualize where they want everything to go before laying down planks and pipes.

Frostpunk is available now on Mac, PC, PS4, Xbox One, and is in development for mobile devices.
