Smith is the third character that players can use in Griftlands, but must be unlocked before his story or runs become available.

Griftlands is a roguelite deckbuilding game where players build two decks at once, one for negotiation and one for battle. Its rich worldbuilding and fun characters, plus its engaging gameplay, has players wondering if it's coming to Switch.

There are three characters that players can take on the role of in Griftlands. Each one has their own unique story, and each can participate in Brawl, the game's pure roguelite run mode. The last character players unlock is Smith, a heavy hitting brawler. Here's a quick guide to unlocking Smith in Griftlands and to how Smith actually plays in game overall.

Before unlocking Smith, players must first unlock Rook. To do this, they must play story mode for Sal, the first character that players have by default. There's no need to go all out and defeat Kashio however, or even make the difficult choice between Oolo and Nadan. Instead, players just need to complete the first day of Sal's story. It's probably the easiest chapter in any character's story, with a relatively easy selection of possible bosses. Sal's starting decks are also very strong with multiple directions for growth, and she has the opportunity to get a pet early.

After Sal, it's time to play Rook. Rook is somewhat trickier than Sal to master, and is fairly vulnerable on his first day, even to a relatively tame combat quest. Unlike Sal, Rook cannot purchase or train a pet by default, but he needs companions in battle. It's best to stick to negotiation where possible and try to master his coin flipping gameplay. The boss at the end of the day will be fairly tough, but defeating that boss, and thus completing that first day, unlocks Smith. Pro tip: skip the negotiation on the boss and go straight for battle, it's much safer.

As mentioned above, Smith is a bruiser who hits hard and gets hit hard. Just like the Ironclad of Slay the Spire, Smith damages himself with his own cards, but this is all part of the plan. Taking damage on his turn is actually a good thing for Smith.

That's because Smith has a trait called Moxie that increases every time he takes damage on his turn. Then, at the end of his turn, he heals for his total Moxie and his Moxie goes down. In other words, the more he hurts himself, the more he can heal and take huge hits. He's a slightly different take on a tank character, and he thrives with the right cards.

Griftlands is out now for PC, PS4, Switch, and Xbox One.
