Unseen Destiny 2 Area Shows Big Plans for Changing Up Gameplay

One Destiny 2 player glitches into an inaccessible zone and discovers new gameplay features which could be a testing ground for future content.

For better or for worse, most fans always want to know what's coming in games, especially ones that fit under the live service moniker. While Destiny 2 is no stranger to dataminers and leaks, Season of the Splicer seems to have hit a new high with details coming out long before they're likely intended. The datamining aspect has gotten so severe that Bungie issued strong remarks over the past couple of days over details which got out regarding upcoming story content.

Still, not everything that comes out for Destiny 2 is datamined information. Throughout the entire franchise, players have been able to discover early area's of the game using glitches or techniques to break in early. From the House of Wolves expansion during the Destiny 1 days, to revisiting the Rise of Iron area at Felwinter's Peak which is supposed to be fenced off, players continue to find innovative ways to move around the game worlds. This latest one may have actually discovered a potential Bungie testing ground for upcoming content.

A YouTuber known as JB3 posted a video showing them entering into a Destiny 2 zone known as Quarantine Zone 236. While most new Beyond Light players will have never seen this area due to the Red War campaign being placed in the Destiny Content Vault, the zone was previously only accessible during the story mission known as Spark where the player attempts to reach a Traveler Shard. Naturally, considering how inaccessible this zone is, it appears Bungie may have converted it into a place to safely test new mechanics and content before going live.

Upon glitching back into the zone, JB3 notices odd statues shaped like Guardians in various spots of the zone. Some are easy to spot, while others appear to be hidden such as one that is barely above the ground line. It's possible these are being used to test scale, indicating how big or small something would be compared to the size of a player character. Players have found these before in Destiny 2, such as prior to the Festering Core strike was officially added to the game.

However, the real interesting piece to this is that the player discovered the zone now has destructible elements to it, something the current game does not have at all. Using a Titan Shoulder Charge, the player zips through a grassy section of the map which causes leaves and grass to shoot into the air. What's more impressive is that the should charge also shatters nearby trees, causing them to break apart and crash down.

It's unknown if this sort of physics interaction will ultimately become anything, but the zone where this is being tested has a similar vibe to that of Old Chicago, a swampy area which has been heavily rumored to be coming in the Witch Queen expansion early in 2022. With plenty of greenery and trees, further confirmed by a recent Bungie teaser screenshot, it's possible this environmental interaction feature could be planned to debut with the expansion.

Destiny 2 is available now for PC, PS4, PS5, Stadia, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S.
