When it was released exclusively on the PlayStation 5 in 2023, Marvel's Spider-Man 2 quickly became one of the year's biggest hits. Like its predecessor, the game launched to near-universal critical acclaim. On review aggregator OpenCritic, for example, it garnered a Top Critic Average of 90, with 97% of outlets recommending the game. Reviews for the title were so glowing, in fact, that it was nominated for Game of the Year at The Game Awards. Additionally, Marvel's Spider-Man 2 sold around 2.5 million units 24 hours after its October 20 launch, making it the fastest selling PlayStation Studios game ever made at the time. Sony later announced in April 2024 that the game had sold more than 11 million copies worldwide, which was especially impressive considering it was only available on one platform.
