Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War’s frustrating hidden name bug is still plaguing the game, though Treyarch confirms that it is working on a fix.

Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War fans are no stranger to glitches and bugs, though most are fixed shortly after they are discovered. However, some persist for much longer, with the name plate bug plaguing the game for the entirety of Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War Season 3.

Making the rounds near the start of last month, Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War’s name bug sees the tag’s above friendly players not appearing. This is frustrating for several reasons, as it will likely see players wasting their ammo firing at an unnamed ally. On top of this, it gives away their position on the mini map if their gun is not silenced, and it could also distract them from firing at a real enemy. As such, this bug is leading to a lot of unnecessary deaths.

Unfortunately, this Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War issue remains unfixed. Much like Gunfight Tournament rewards, Zombies XP, the AMP63’s aim assist, and the Die Maschine exfil bug, gamers are forced to keep putting up with the hidden player names. One of the people struggling with this bug is Redditor AAC_Nitro, with the player genuinely confused on if this is a bug or if Treyarch simply changed how nametags function. Pointing out how “confusing” the issue is, commenters explained the bug’s prevalence in the comments.

Confirming that it is a proper glitch instead of a change to Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War’s settings, those replying to the post assured AAC_Nitro that they were not alone. On top of this, Treyarch community manager FoxhoundFPS responded, confirming that he has forwarded all the info about the bug to the rest of Treyarch. While the developer is “investigating,” FoxhoundFPS does confirm that it is a difficult glitch to reproduce. As such, he is unable to provide an ETA for the patch. However, many believe they have found out how the bug can be avoided until the fix arrives.

According to deleted_user420, the bug seems to occur when jumping into multiplayer after a match of Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War Zombies. While fans have not pointed to Outbreak or a specific Survival map as the cause, gamers should restart their game after their Zombies match is complete. If they do not, they run the risk of this bug happening to them, with friendly player names disappearing because of this switch from Zombies to multiplayer.

While Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War fans do know how to avoid the issue, hopefully Treyarch is able to fix it soon. With Season 4 less than 2 weeks away, there is a chance that the next big update for the game provides a solution to the problem.

Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War is available now on PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Series X.
