When Death Stranding 2: On the Beach was first announced in 2022, there was little reason to believe that it would ever come to a non-PlayStation console. After all, the Death Stranding IP was owned by Sony at the time, and the game's predecessor hadn't been released on Xbox or Nintendo platforms. In addition, it was revealed that DS2 would run on Decima, a proprietary engine that was developed internally at PlayStation subsidiary Guerrilla Games. Since Sony was so heavily involved in the development of the game, both in publishing and producing, a multiplatform release (other than a PC port) seemed out of the question. Death Stranding 2 was practically guaranteed to be an indefinite PlayStation console exclusive, not unlike The Last of Us or God of War.
