Why Mirage Betrays Crypto in Apex Legends: Overtime #1

In a recent Apex Legends background comic featuring The Syndicate, Crypto is betrayed and left for dead by Mirage for seemingly unknown reasons.

The Apex Games are meant to find the best of the best. These champions are known as the titular Apex Legends, and they can only achieve that title by being apart of the last standing squad out of 50. For those brave enough to try, the would-be champions will have to fight off the hundreds of other Champions who are all gunning for each other. This kind of constant competition amongst the Legends leads to friction between the variety of large personalities that compete in the Apex Games. This often leads to fights that happen outside the Apex Legends arena.

Some of the popular examples include Lifeline being less than friendly after Octane manipulated her into making him prosthetic legs. While Revenant doesn't like anyone, Loba has a special kind of hate for the simulacrum who killed both of her parents in front of her. One pair that hasn't seemed to have too many hiccups has been Crypto and Mirage, who some could argue have been closer to friends than enemies. However, that recently changed in the Apex Legends: Overtime #1 comic, which saw Crypto betrayed by Mirage for an EMP-shielded suitcase.

When they first met, it seems that Crypto's appearance betrayed his true age. Mirage mockingly refers to the young tech savvy superstar as "kid" in the Apex Legends Season 3 trailer, before telling him "Try to keep up." To be fair, Gibraltar calls him kid first, and Mirage probably just liked the way it sounded. In response, Crypto jokingly calls Mirage "old man." Weirdly enough, during a mission in Apex Legends Season 5, it's revealed that Crypto is actually a year older than Mirage. From this point on they switch the names they call each other, with Mirage being the "kid" and Crypto becoming the "old man."

After another round of the Apex Games, Gibraltar, Wraith, and Wattson emerge victorious. While all the other Legends are being swarmed by adoring fans, Mirage stands off by himself. After practically begging him, Crypto finally relents and says he will go get a drink after he runs an errand. While Mirage is waiting across the bar, Crypto meets his contact, who is holding a briefcase.

Crypto states that he has the money, as long as the portly man has the information in the case. The man states the info isn't in the case, but he can send it to Crypto. A creature that looks like Revenant drops from the ceiling and attacks, to which Crypto and Mirage defend. After a back-and-forth fight, the Revenant puts Crypto in a headlock and offers to trade the hacker for the briefcase that Mirage is holding.

Revenant says "I'll trade you, for your friend." Immediately, Mirage drops his fun-loving attitude and says "I don't have any friends," before doing a back flip off the roof with the briefcase in his hand. The story will be continued in the next issue, but fans are left wondering why Crypto was betrayed by someone who was watching his back moments before. It could be that Mirage recognizes how valuable the briefcase is and wants to sell it for his own. However, there is also the possibility that he may have a secret motive to be revealed in the next issue. Perhaps the Mirage holding the case is a clone, as shown earlier in the issue.

In recent seasons, Apex Legends has added comics to go along with the loot boxes that randomly drop from supply chests. Apex Legends: Overtime #1 is the first standalone comic available from the battle royale franchise. While the comic is a little short, the drawings are beautiful and the character dialogue is spot on.

Apex Legends is available on Nintendo Switch, PC, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One.
