PlayStation Boss Jim Ryan explains why Sony decided to remove the CD Projekt Red's Cyberpunk 2077 from the PlayStation Store.

In a historical move, Sony removed Cyberpunk 2077 from the PlayStation store last year. When the highly anticipated CD Projekt Red title officially launched, it did so with numerous bugs, especially on previous-gen consoles — the Xbox One, and of course, the PlayStation 4. The ports suffered technical issues so severe they nearly made the games unplayable in some cases. As such, Sony delisted Cyberpunk from the PlayStation Store not even a month after its release, something it's pretty much never done before.

In a recent interview with Axios, PlayStation Boss Jim Ryan spoke more about the reason behind the decision. Particularly, PlayStation's competition expands way beyond gaming. Sony has films on the way, such as Uncharted and Ghost of Tsushima, and it even has a TV adaptation of The Last of Us. As such, its decisions veer more toward keeping its ever-expanding community happy, and a part of doing that means not knowingly selling them a game that might result in a bad experience.

Again, Cyberpunk 2077 bugs ran rampant when it first launched, especially on consoles such as the PS4 and Xbox One. The issues actually ruined enough player experiences that Sony, as well as Microsoft and CD Projekt Red, got hit with widespread demand for refunds. So, essentially, while it was "a tough decision" for Sony to make, it ultimately settled on removing Cyberpunk 2077 from the PlayStation Store, not wanting to sell something faulty at the time.

That said, Ryan didn't have anything to say regarding how CD Projekt Red could get Cyberpunk back on the PlayStation Store. His silence could mean that PlayStation just has no intention of putting the game back up, but more likely that he just doesn't want to say anything that's not concrete or well thought out. If he states something, then CD Projekt only has to meet whatever he says to get Cyberpunk back on the listings, and that may not be in PlayStation's best interest considering the state of the game.

That said, CD Projekt Red has been doing its best to clean up Cyberpunk, releasing patches like the recent patch 1.2. Considering PlayStation decided to revoke Cyberpunk from the store due to community feedback, it might reinstate it should the community support such a decision. As it stands, while CD Projekt Red has fixed up the ports to make them playable, Cyberpunk still suffers from glitches. The studio might be able to get the game back up with a few more patches.

Cyberpunk 2077 is on PC, PS4, Stadia, and Xbox One — PS5 and Xbox Series X versions in development.
