Tiny Tina's Wonderlands trailer highlights an all-new direction for the Borderlands series, but one new feature stood out among the rest.

This year's Summer Games Fest saw a number of massive reveals, including the long-rumored but now-confirmed Tiny Tina's Wonderlands, a unique spin-off of the Borderlands franchise. Tiny Tina's Wonderlands is a merging of the traditional Borderlands style with a high-fantasy RPG, in which Tiny Tina serves as the player's "Bunker Master," guiding them through a tabletop game brought to life. Judging from the trailer, it looks as though Tiny Tina's standalone game is set to take the franchise's traditionally wacky story to a whole other level.

Tiny Tina's Wonderlands looks as though it will bring a large number of interesting changes to the table. For starters, the game appears to be combining Dungeons and Dragons with Borderlands for the second time; however, this time it seems to commit even further to the fantasy aesthetic. But the aesthetics and genre aren't the extents of the new features being brought into the franchise, with an intriguing "multiclass" system raising plenty of eyebrows.

Multiclassing is a feature in Dungeons and Dragons 5E that is set to make its Borderlands debut in Tiny Tina's Wonderlands. Multiclassing allows the player to use levels to improve skills that fall outside of their main class. This feature allows players to diversify their skills in Dungeons and Dragons, becoming a more well-rounded build, capable of handling a diverse range of situations. As a result, the player may miss out on max-level features, but it's a balancing act of deciding which traits are right for which build. What this system will look like in Tiny Tina's Wonderlands, however, is a bit less black and white.

What was made apparent from Tiny Tina's Wonderlands' announcement trailer was that the game will heavily indulge in the fantasy elements of DnD. The trailer featured a hooded figure making a gun before fighting a dragon with a combination of the machine gun in one hand and a spell in the other. This is likely what multiclassing refers to in the case of Tiny Tina's Wonderlands, the ability to combine traditional D&D classes, such as the mage, with traditional Borderlands classes like the Bezerker. This would be a huge shakeup to the series as it would allow the player to play Borderlands as it's never been played before, affording them far more control over the build of their character.

The addition of magic to the series could bring an all-new dimension to the classic Borderlands gameplay. The series has previously dipped into superhuman abilities with the Siren class, which gives the player a variety of powers that vary depending on the game. It appears, however, that Tiny Tina's Wonderlands fantasy elements are set to see this aspect delve even further into the realm of traditional fantasy, but how will this work?

If leveling shares a similar pattern to other Borderlands games, it's likely that multiclass abilities like spellcasting will be improved by using skill points to buy perks. It's unclear how skill points will function in a multiclass system, but presumably, it will be in a similar way to D&D, where the player chooses which class they would like to invest their points into. This would give the player the ability to create never-ending possibilities of multiclass combinations and would make replayability some of the best in the series.

This is a very exciting time for Borderlands fans but, for now, they can only speculate as to how multiclass systems and other DnD elements will be implemented into Tiny Tina's Wonderland.

Tiny Tina's Wonderlands is set for release in 2022 on PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X.
