Nintendo announces the new 2D game Metroid Dread at E3 2021, and confirms two new amiibo will release alongside the title later this year.

Nintendo began its E3 2021 presentation with the reveal that Kazuya Mishima from Tekken is being added to Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, but that's not the only announcement it had prepared. A new 2D Metroid game called Metroid Dread was also revealed for release this October, and it will be coming alongside two amiibo.

The title carries on the 2D style of Metroid: Samus Returns from 2017 and is billed as "Metroid 5," the sequel to Metroid Fusion. Its trailer opens up with Samus exploring planet ZDR where she encounters a seemingly unkillable robotic being called E.M.M.I., which once served as a DNA-extracting research machine according to Nintendo's official listing. It seemingly pursues her throughout the adventure.

Both Samus in her brand-new suit, which sees her in a red, white, and blue color scheme, as well as E.M.M.I. will be released as amiibo figures on October 8. The new Metroid game, which costs $59.99, is available to pre-order now.

While Metroid fans should be pleased about this new 2D game announcement, the highly anticipated Metroid Prime 4 was only confirmed to still be in development - no new information was provided. Time will tell when that game releases, but Metroid Dread should be good to hold people over in the meantime.

Metroid Dread releases October 8, 2021 for Nintendo Switch.
