CD Projekt Red provides Cyberpunk 2077 fans with an update about the upcoming PlayStation 5 version of the game, which is coming this year.

Cyberpunk 2077 was easily one of the most highly-anticipated game releases of 2020, with a considerable hype train behind it. When Cyberpunk 2077 launched, however, it became immediately apparent that the game ran horrendously on base PS4 and Xbox One consoles, prompting CD Projekt Red to issue refunds to anyone that wanted one. Eventually, Sony decided to remove Cyberpunk 2077 from the PlayStation Store altogether until the game's quality reached an acceptable level, and now, months later, it has finally made its return.

Cyberpunk 2077 is back on the PlayStation Store, with a message suggesting PS4 gamers play it on a PS4 Pro or PS5, warning them away from base PS4 consoles. Considering this, some may decide to wait until the proper PS5 version of Cyberpunk 2077 is available, and while no release date has been announced to date, CD Projekt Red has at least narrowed down a release window for the game's next-gen upgrade.

CD Projekt Red has confirmed that the Cyberpunk 2077 PS5 upgrade will release at some point in the second half of this year. Anyone that owns the PS4 version of Cyberpunk 2077 digitally or on-disc will be able to upgrade to the PS5 version at no additional cost. Specifics on how exactly Cyberpunk 2077 on PS5 will take advantage of the next-generation console's unique features or beefed-up hardware have yet to be detailed, but more information should come in the near future.

Cyberpunk 2077's initial reviews from critics were mostly positive, as those scores were based on the game running on powerful PC hardware. Presumably, Cyberpunk 2077 on PS5 will offer a similar experience to the PC version in terms of performance and graphics, so perhaps the next-gen version of the game will be its second chance at a first impression for console players. Plus, CD Projekt Red will continue to release Cyberpunk 2077 patches to continue addressing the game's lingering issues, so by the time the PS5 version is out, it should be in much better shape overall.

Besides Cyberpunk 2077's next-gen version, fans of the game may have some brand new content to look forward to this year as well. While plans could certainly change, CD Projekt Red has confirmed that Cyberpunk 2077 DLC is in active development, and the belief was that this DLC would launch in 2021. Between the next-gen version of Cyberpunk 2077 and the potential DLC, the game could very well make a major comeback this year and improve its reputation.

More information on Cyberpunk 2077's next-gen port should come to light in the months ahead.

Cyberpunk 2077 is out now for PC, PS4, Stadia, and Xbox One, with PS5 and Xbox Series X versions also in development.
