In celebration of Global Rick and Morty Day, Adult Swim cast the season 5 premiere from a miniature ship flown up in the atmosphere.

The year-long wait for another eclectic season of Rick and Morty has come to a close. Season 5 premiered on June 20th in the midst of celebrations for Global Rick and Morty Day, and it did so in the most unexpected way.

Adult Swim offered a unique viewing experience for the season 5 premiere of Rick and Morty, casting the highly demanded first episode from 150,000 feet up in the atmosphere. Those watching saw the show from behind a miniature ship with the titular characters themselves in the seats, and they also witnessed breathtaking views of the Earth behind it all.

The drone remained in the atmosphere the full length of the premiered episode, and the cameras stayed on through the landing of the drone. In space, the drone was continually moving and the camera angles would change every now and again, allowing the audience to take in the incredible view of the Earth and the aura of the atmosphere. The miniature model of the ship has an incredible amount of detail. Although viewers never see the Rick and Morty figures from the front, their hilarious countenances can be seen reflected on the screen every time it went black. Rick was seen with a maniacal grin and Morty was looking quite nervous, with enlarged terrified eyes.

After the premiere ended and the TV screen goes to black, the drone begins circling and making its descent back down to Earth. For the last ten minutes, audiences watched Rick and Morty's ship slowly make its landing. Of course, staying true to the show, the ship ultimately lands on its side in the middle of a vast desert, and viewers are left with that image as the broadcast ends. It is unclear whether Morty's timid wide-eyed stare was meant for the botched landing or the traumatic experiences he endured in the new episode.

Adult Swim did not fail in making an unbelievable experience for fans to ring in the first Global Rick and Morty Day. Many fans and companies took the time to find creative ways to celebrate the day. Wendy's even created a pop-up drive-thru experience at participating locations.

The first episode was filled with a classic Rick and Morty blend of bleak and unsuccessful adventure, side-splitting witticisms, and clever references. Season 5 of Rick and Morty seems to have a lot in store for the ever-popular franchise and it appears fans feel the premiere alone was well worth the long wait.

Rick and Morty airs on Sunday at 11 pm ET on Adult Swim.
